VANCOUVER — Stop the presses! British Columbia is a dope den.

Ian Tracey probably had a good chuckle when he read about a new study, released last week by the University of Victoria-based Centre for Addictions Research of B.C. and Simon Fraser University's Centre for Applied Research on Mental Health and Addictions, which shows pot usage is more prevalent is his home province than the rest of Canada.

                          MORENA BACCARIN, STARGATE SG-1 INTERVIEW

Morena Baccarin first made waves in the sci-fi genre as Inara Serra in the wildly popular space western Firefly. After Firefly made its way to the big screen as Serenity, Morena moved on to other projects, including stints on Justice League, The O.C. and a regular recurring gig on Stargate SG-1. With the show now in its final season, Morena chats about what Stargate has been like and what it's like to be so far removed from Firefly a couple years after the fact.Morena Baccarin on how Firefly prepared her for the sci-fi world and for Stargate SG-1:This show has a completely different feel from Firefly. Firefly had a little more of a Western thing going, more cowboys and sawed-off shotguns. This is very sci-fi. I see it as two different shows. But I guess a lot of people could compare the two, but this has an element of superpowers and telekinetic things, and it's stuff that I've never really done before.

                          AMANDA TAPPING, STARGATE SG-1 INTERVIEW

Amanda Tapping on the evolution of Samantha Carter since Season Onehe's a much more accessible character now. She's more laid back, she's got a better sense of humor, she's not so uptight, and she's not out to prove herself so much. She's really comfortable in her own skin and it's nice to play a character like that. It's nice to see she's evolved this much and it's nice to be a part of the evolution of her. In the last couple of years, I don't think there's been as much play on Carter and that's been the challenge for me over the last couple of years, to keep it real and interesting when there's not a lot to do, when the character hasn't been given a lot of development over the last couple of years. So that's been the challenge, but then you look at that, and you go, "Okay, that's my challenge as an actress, to try and find something interesting there."

                          CHRISTOPHER JUDGE, STARGATE SG-1 INTERVIEW

UGO: When SG-1 was cancelled, the fan base really spoke out against the show leaving the air. Were you surprised by that at all?
CHRISTOPHER JUDGE: Flattered, more than surprised. Really touched that after this long the fans are still as loyal as they are. It's great that we didn't just all of a sudden fade away, because we were all a little taken aback by the timing and it was really touching to see there was that much outrage from the fans. It was really quite touching.

A friend that saw the pictures said that Amanda looked a little larger than usual. She is still thin and in no way even slightly overweight but considering how thin she used to be my friend thought that she might be in the first trimester. What do people here think?

Must admit, as people get older, you do put on a little more weight. It's just life. I'm sure if Amanda is pregnant, she might say something (when she's ready) on her own website.

Finding my inner nerd: Michael’s adventures at ValleyCon

                                Columnist

This past weekend I decided to look for my inner nerd.

I think much of America has a general stereotype of the nerd I’m talking about: not the guy with a plaid shirt, thick glasses and possibly buck teeth, but the guy that waits in line to see “Star Wars,” plays Dungeons and Dragons and watches anime.

My search led me to ValleyCon, an annual convention held in Fargo that showcases this culture and everything that goes along with it.

First, I stopped at the registration table. A guy gave me a nametag and told me to put some sort of name on it. I asked him if people put silly names on them or their real names. He told me a lot of people used silly names, so I called myself “Master Chief.” May as well try to fit in.

The few things I mentioned earlier are just a few examples of what you can experience there. Every year the event brings in actors, authors, artists and anyone else appealing to the convention goers.

For instance, this year was supposed to include William Shatner. I know a lot of people probably know him from his outstanding achievements as a musician, but I hear he also did some work on some TV show. Regardless, he is tentatively slated for an appearance next year.

This year, however, included several names that were unfamiliar to me, but were nonetheless impressive: Claudia Christian from “Babylon 5,” Dean Haglund from the “The X Files” and “The Lone Gunman,” and Gary Jones, a playwright and comedian who also appeared on “Stargate SG-1.”

                                **major snippage**

I haven’t even touched the subject of the people yet – stay tuned for my next piece when I’ll talk about them.
