That is exactly how I feel. (Kind of like a glorified guest.)
I understand about not having a signature right away and not being able to upload your own avatar. (A number of forums I post on have that restriction for newbies.) I'm a little confused about why using one of the supplied avatars isn't allowed right away. There doesn't seem to be (unless I'm missing something) any way a spammer could exploit that.

I'm sure that's true and I'm not arguing about that.

I personally would just feel better having my profile filled out even if no one else but me saw it. (It wouldn't bother me if I couldn't upload a profile picture right away. I can see how spammers might use that. I just want to be able to fill in some of the text.)

the thing is.... with the limits of the software, I can't allow parts of the profile to be active. It's an 'all or nothing' thing.

If i had a way to allow avatars, etc, i'd love to. but i'm limited by what VB will allow. and they do it all or nothing.

I know it sucks. And I didn't want to lock off profiles. But when we started getting spammers filling their profile full of junk links, we had to do something. It's the same reason we locked off PM's and VM's....we had a spammer deluge a bunch of our posters with their junk.

We've only done what the spammers have forced us to do.

We started out with simple new member moderation. then, after we cleared a post, they'd go in and edit their post to put their junk in. so we took away editing. Then they filled up their profile and sig with junk, then pm's, the vm's. and even now I have spammers trying to e-mail or post stuff.

I didn't realize that it was an all or nothing thing with the profile. I know that just PM privileges can be restricted (I've seen that done to posters on other forums) and I thought that could be done with other features as well.

It stinks that spammers have to make things difficult for everyone. I'd totally support a way to crack down on them.

Now I understand why I couldn't edit my profile. This helped a lot because I used to have a account a long time ago, but I stopped using it. On the old account I could edit my profile and such things like that. Even though spammers messed everything up, I think I like this better because it makes me want to get out of the probie stage.

I understand the process, but given I can see others on here with 20+ posts all with probie status, I can see myself growing very tired of the waiting for moderator approval.

personally as a admin and mod on other forums, using certain limitations on what a new user can do (I used 5 legitimate posts over 5 days as my criteria (more than enough to discourage spammers)) the limitations were not being able to add links to the profile, and not being able to post images/urls (even plain text ones) and a script that failed the registration process if the profile bits were attempted to fill in (stopped the scripts from generating new users)

this obviously is open to spammers in the sense they might be able to post vitriol or nonsense, but stopped spammers who were linking to products/pages or displaying porn. and were very effective (though this was phpBB, I tried helping a friend of mine who used vBulletin, and I wouldn't touch it with yours.)

I'm a member of many forums (at last count think it was 40+) and only active on a few, so I know that the moderation thing will limit my use (its already starting to grate...)

I appreciate where you're coming from. And we do go in and promote people before they earn their way off...on the other hand, i've also had spammers post the same junk abouot 10 times, just to sese if we have a low limit so at least a few of their messages get through. Or had early promotions turn around and edit their posts to get spam through.

I do sincerely understand, but we do have a couple of very, very persistent folks that have gone overboard doing everything they can to get through. Think about the 'dedication' it takes to spam people via visitor messages and private messages.

I admit that even though I understand it completely its a bit annoying waiting. I post more at night and it often takes a good while for my posts to get approved. I'm also dying to post on the game threads, etc and want to post pics in a few "Thunk" threads so its rough, but I can hang.

The big thing that gets me though, is not being able to even edit my general settings which is totally not necessary, but I guess I'm a bit of a fanatic about stuff like that. LOL

Anyway, I also have to mention to Thunderstorm that your signature is soooo frakking awesome that I think I might just have to participate in the Michael Shanks Thunk Thread after drooling over it for days too!! ...Man, its going to be hard to post anywhere but the thunk threads after my probie status is gone!!!! LOL

Click your username in a post and then click "View Forum Post" or there is an advanced search at the top right and you can search by username. I have no idea about probie status impacts on either of these.

I was just wondering about this reputation feature people are talking about. I am not sure how it works. Is that I am a probie and I can't affect it yet?

I don't think probies can get out rep. IIRC spammers used rep messages to spam so the mods had to get rid of that for probies. If I'm wrong you should see a little star in posts

Thanks, I just read through the thread and realized that the question was answered. My bad. Anyways, thanks. Looks like I can see my own, but not give anyone else some.

I can't rep people but I have 135 rep points. I also can not reply to the notes I've gotten from people that have "greened" me, for the record.

That being said I've had 36 on topic posts (+10 not counted) and 135 rep points, but I'm still a lowly probie. Maybe by the end of today...
