'Probie' Status for New Members

they are. and the ones here are especially annoying and creative. We had to inplement the probie status after a spam attack where someone(s) posted dozens of spam and porn messages. We then had to take away post editing ability because after we'd clear a probie message, they'd edit it to put in their spam junk. we had to take away sigs because they tried using sigs to get their links and messages out there. We had to lock away private and visitor messages because they, being locked out of posting, decided to deluge some forum members with spam pm's.

we don't like doing this. It takes time and effort and I know it's a pain for new members to not be able to post...but it's the spammers. They're the ones that make a half to a dozen posts a day trying to get their junk out there that are the reason we've had to do it.

And i know more and more forums or mailing lists that are doing the same thing. Locking down new members due to spammers. As the economy gets worse, they get more vicious. Most of those 'make money from home' schemes are people being signed up to blast mailing lists or forums or the such with spam.

After setting up my initial profile, I haven't been able to access that page again.

Also, I never received an email notification. Is there something I should/can do about that?

the number of posts to graduate from probie to basic trainee is a secret and changes....which we can't tell you cause it'd kinda defeat the purpose of blocking the spammers

I have a question, being the Probie that I am. I tried to find the answer for myself in the FAQ, but couldn't find it. How do you thank people that have given you Rep. points and encouraging comments? Is that something that has to wait until you are out of Probie status?

Also, the FAQ say to click on the "scale" in the gray bar on the right side of post to add Rep. points to someone else's post. I'm just not seeing where that is. I understand that I do not qualify to do that yet, but I don't see where I'm suppose to do that for future reference.

Ah something else that needs to be changed. When we got the big upgrade of the forum the reputation button changed.
It is now the star at the bottom left corner of the post.

As for thanking people for rep points/commets, that differs among people. Some think you should rep back, I don't like that - I rep them because I liked the post/sig/avatar, etc not to get points or comments back. I personally think unless it's a really exceptional commet, smile and move on. Then when you see a post from someone else that you like, rep them.

Because your new I don't think you can give reputation comments. Due to spammers trying to post their links, etc everywhere imaginable, every avenue had to be eventually blocked until new members can show to the moderators satisfaction that you are a valid poster and not someone trying to sneak in and post spam as soon as they are allowed freedom.

Because your new I don't think you can give reputation comments.

Let me clarify: why does it look like I can give myself reputation points when I shouldn't be able to give them to anyone?

You can hoover over your star to see if the rep has been given to that post or not. It's also a quick access to see how many rep point you have as well. Other option is to go to My Controls to see the rep.

At least that's what I use it for.
