Thanks much! I have lurked as a guest for a while now here and at some other sites related to other subjects until I learned how things sort of work. I bought my first computer and internet access a few months back and it's like this whole new world opened up to me! Before I only was able to use a computer at the library or at the comm. college for a little while.

It's not up at Gateworld for a good reason; nobody knows.

Well, TPTB at SciFi and Bridges know, but we don't.

Aw, is that what you meant, Ronj? The actual percentage of people watching the ep. I thought it was fan ratings you were talking about.

*shrug* beats me. Either way, SciFi Wire will post the ratings on Sunday night. For "The Shroud", we'll need to wait...3 days.

              So don't hold your breath.

*pokes people* sorry but where on Scifi Wire can I find the ratings? And the Shroud aired 3 weeks ago or so, so those should be out by now... thanks!

It's actually not exactly 3 weeks. We'll get it 2 days from now.

When it does appear, go here: http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/ and look at the lower right purple box that now lists the DVD sales.

As Tyler said, if Gateworld is graphics-heavy as it is, can you imagine what unlimited signature sizes would do? Bandwidth would probably triple overnight. But it isn't JUST a case of conserving bandwidth, it's a case of megasigs being an utter pain in the arse to look at when you're TRYING to read a thread. There are few things here more obnoxious than someone posting "lol" followed by a page worth of graphics/text. It makes things cluttered and if sigs matched the size of some egos around here it'd be almost impossible to actually read a thread. Which is the reason we're all here, right? To read and to interact, not to prove you're the biggest fan by having the biggest sig.

The sig limits on Gateworld are more generous than in some places I've seen and the way I look at it is this: If you can't "express yourself" in the space allotted, it says more about you than it does about Gateworld.

                            3) How is it, that everything posted in doesn't relate to Post Counts at all? Granted there is a fair amount of 'Spam' in there, but there are also some genuine posts too.
This has been mentioned numerous times before, but the fact remains: Gateworld is a Stargate/scifi forum. You get points for contributing to Stargate/scifi topics and there are some rewards tied into that (more PM space, avatars, etc). Darren set it up that way to create some incentive for people to stay on Gateworld in the long term... to discuss Stargate and scifi topics. If people could come on here and spam their way to the goals without ever once discussing a single Stargate-related thing, what would be the point? Why would you come to a Stargate board and NOT discuss Stargate and yet still expect to be rewarded for it? That would be like going to school, playing on the computers all day and then expect to be given an A on all the courses you didn't attend. It doesn't work like that. Yes, there is some "meaningful" content in Off Topic, but a lot of that is in the eye of the beholder (for instance, I think a discussion of sex not only isn't important but doesn't deserve to be on Gateworld at all) and just because there are SOME bits of gold floating around doesn't mean the whole cesspit should receive elevated status.

                            - Off Topic Chatter (Genuine)
                            - Off Topic Chatter (Spam)
Even with some clever name changes, do you honestly, sincerely believe that a majority of users would willingly post in a non-counting area if they could post in a counting area? There are already some threads in on topic areas that shouldn't be there, but doing something like that would cause the numbers to skyrocket. People in general are selfish and greedy and will exploit every loophole they can find in order to get something for nothing. Not only would most people post in the "Genuine" OT area, but when questioned they'd probably have elaborate excuses/explanations for why it deserved to be there.

Off Topic is what it is, but one thing it isn't is an area where posts count. Hopefully Darren will keep it that way, otherwise there'd be no point at all in calling this a Stargate community.

As for the BS about "other forums do it," well, if other forums jumped off a cliff, would you expect Gateworld to do it, too? Gateworld isn't like "other forums" and for every "other" forum that allows OT posts to count there are probably also some that don't.

Go to "My Controls" and select "Edit Options" from the menu on the left. Scroll down a ways, and there should be "Receive Email Notification of New Private Messages" box that you can check.

As far as I know, you can receive an e-mail notification letting you know that someone has sent you a private message, but I think you may have to log into GW to see the actual message.
