By canceling Atlantis, the network showed us they have decided that concept didn't work. I personally think they killed it when they killed Ford and then Carson; that was a stupid decision in the first place (the potential for Ford's story arc was huge, and potentially very dark), and I truly hope they realize that, because Universe is an opportunity, and I'd hate to see it go to waste.
Don't these two contradict each other?

Agreed. I'm really worried that its gonna suck. I don't want to watch some crew of 18 year olds flying around space having high school drama. If it goes that way, then the franchise is doomed.

From the front Gateworld blurb, it seems it's going to be Stargate 90120.
The show now truely has jumped the shark!!
        i give it one season-tops.

As I was saying earlier, network honchos are notorious for having no idea what they are talking about, yet speaking anyway. They just say what they think people want to hear, thinking they are creating 'hype' when what they ate really doing is sabotaging their own show and creating panic. They get where they are by being business people and publicists, not from having any idea about the creative side. We should try not to get too freaked out (hard though that very scary post makes it) until we have heard from the Stargate folks. I'm really betting that this is way off base, or at least badly misinterpreted. If we hear the same thing from Brad Wright, okay, time to panic, but I bet that won't happen.
EDIT: Just took a look at the Gateworld news piece-It's from the same source- and one thing that caught my eye that actually does scare me, because it's a hard thing to misinterpret, and that is that it will be a more "space based series". Now I thought Atlantis went too far away from a focus on gate travel. If this goes further, that would be bad. Of course maybe that's just network guy's way of saying 'they're live on a space ship'. Fingers crossed tightly!

Nobody said hip. They're not going to be like the kids in the 200th episode. It probably means instead of having a really tight military system like before, with a commander and chain of command, with lots of phd scientists and what not, they are probably going to be a more ragtag team, they probably aren't prepared for the stargate to the ship being one way. Remember most of the cast on sg-1 and atlantis is pretty much over 40's, or at least in their late 30's. They're probably going to have younger as in less experienced characters in Universe.

After reading the last too news reports, I really don't feel so sad anymore, they sound like they're doing something awesome with the series, and it's like a phoenix being born again stronger. They probably realised atlantis was going dry, and it was a joint decision between everyone, even the producers. That's good, it means they're willing to start over and the idea for Universe sounds mysterious and awesome. Anyone ever read the Rama series by Arthur C. Clarke? it sounds sort of like that.

HOLY CRAP. You guys actually thought they were going to add HIGH SCHOOL children in the cast? I swear the response of this forum is 10 times as depressing to me as Atlantis being cancelled.

Let me put it this way, right now, I am 26 years old. Most of my friends are in their early to mid twenties, and they all watch and love Stargate.

Now they are going to target an EVEN YOUNGER audience? What could that possibly mean? Think about it for a second. What could they possibly be doing to a Stargate show to target a younger audience? They didn't say they were "adding an inexperienced crew". They said they were targeting a younger audience.

To make the show "relevant" for them, they have to add a bunch of juvenile drama. I can only hope this press release is full of crap. Because tomorrow when more people see this, they are gonna go ballistic.

Not saying that I buy into that report, but if it is true, then why do these ill prepared people have access to the stargate?
I was being facetious when I spoke of children in space, because the tone of the network exec, speaking of a "youthful vibe" struck me as so entirely ridiculous. The cast of 'Proving Ground' goes to space....

Again, no. People are reacting to a perception that what longtime fans want and expect from stargate is going to be thrown out the window to capture a new demographic. But as I say, It's early days, and this report is one report from a network guy and may be way off base.

Perfect tagline: "Destiny awaits..." Seriously, perfect.

Kinda got low expectations on this one now. Maybe it's the article, or maybe it's just because of Atlantis going down the tubes, but suddenly I'm not so excited about the premise as I was before. The younger audience and "young and desperate explorers" bit definitely caught my eye and made the eyebrow above said eye raise a fair amount.

I suppose it's just as well. I can watch it with a detached feeling and not feel any amount of hurt when it gets cancelled for Stargate: Multiverse or something. To expand the franchise.

                      Stargate: Voyager anyone?

I think we're probably going to see a cast largely in their 20s and 30s, instead of 30s and 40s. The average Stargate fan right now, demographically speaking, is probably in her 40s.

It won't necessarily be everyone's cup of tea, but I think it's a wise move for the long-term of the franchise. The big problem with ratings right now is that we need an infusion of new viewers. Most television viewers at this point know about Stargate, and have already decided whether or not they are going to watch it. We need to reach a new audience.

I don't get it why are you all coming to conclusions? Keller is young, the women on the all women team in atlantis are young. That's how young these guys will probably be. I don't think they even mean that much accent on that particular face of Universe, they just mean they were going to make it a fresher more modern series, like BSG. It's like people can't wait to be screwed over and the moment something is said by TPTB they go OMG THEY SCREWED US OVER and take it all out of proportion. Why not just wait and see?

you know-that's all fine and good-but what are we going to get-half naked babes? or the skin type jumpsuit ala 7 of 9? or the older-seasoned commander and the younger officers and have them try and ship the old guy with a young girl-or maybe have an older seasoned female commander of a ship lost in the delta quadrant that has to ...
oh-wait-they already did that-it was Star Trek: Voyager.

Robert Cooper has some say in this show-and can we say Vala Mal Duran-that charcter was so undervalued and the actress so underutilized. Do we really need more female characters dressed up like porn stars?

The news just got out why are you already guessing wildly like this? I don't understand the basic gateworld fan's reaction to things like this. Why? We don't know anything about it yet. And this is way too exaggerated. Porn stars? WTF?

I don't think I'll be reading anymore Universe threads it just grinds my nerves. As a fan who just likes watching the show and enjoying it, these threads are really depressing.
