But actually apart from Lost City, I can't see our Sam having the courage to approach him so directly.

Me neither, primarily because of her fear of loss. If she said something and he no longer reciprocated, she'd lose him more-of-less completely. And that's also why I can't see her going to Jack and telling him after Heroes. She'd just been through a real loss, and felt the fear and some of the pain of his possible loss, and so while I think she needed to be with him there at the end I can't really see her opening up and letting him in. I also think it's why we see her approach him so cautiously in Grace, Lost City, and Affinity (as examples). She was 'entering the water slowly' as it were, and at the first sign of trouble -- or the first indication he wasn't interested - she was prepared to back out. Which is what happened (because I think her lowering her head like she did in Lost City *before* Daniel showed up IIRC was a sign of her 'giving up' - at least for then. Even in Threads she hesitates, and her approach is repeatedly apologetic, "I hope I'm not bothering you.... the reason I'm bothering you..." etc. She's trying to buffer the consequences of his turning her down, though by then I think her desperation is such that she's going all the way anyway. She'd finally realized it *had* to be Jack's dog or no ones.

Seriously, though. I believe that Pete's character served its purpose well--and that was to send Sam the message that Jack is the man she's supposed to be "with", and not some other random person. So--on shippy topic--and dog jokes aside--I believe that Pete's arrival did what it was meant to do. Make both Jack and Sam "man up" and end up together, already!

I believe that Movie 3 will be made, and that we will have CONFIRMATION!!!
