I don't think I'd mind but then I'm pretty nonplussed about fanfic. We're borrowing other people's characters/work anyway. But each to their own and I suppose an original plot using SG-1 is technically your intellectual property so I can see how it might irk.

I think it would be similar if someone would start writing a fic/sequel "inspired" by your own fic, including using any original characters you might have introduced.

Yeah, it is kind of a grey area. I think you'd be entitled to be asked if you wished.

I remember when fanfic writers would routinely put where they gave permission for their fics to be archived on the top of the first page with the rating etc but I don't see that so much anymore. Probably because these days most people use ff.net and there aren't so many large archives elsewhere being updated. Shame.

I'd probably cycle through a gamut of emotions if that were to happen to me: extreme surprise, followed by warring emotions of annoyance and pleasure. It's complimentary enough if a good enough writer takes your idea and develops it (with prior permission), and beyond cringe-worthy if the result is something you don't want to be associated with.

As for originality, well...I'm also pretty aware that many ideas are borrowed or given some sort of spin and very few plot lines really surprise me these days.

Yes, I've seen that as well, but I don't think it's the same these days. I, for one, wouldn't want anyone else to post my fics elsewhere considering how much time and effort I put into them.

Yep. I also can't believe people actually steal fanfic and put their name on it! Why anyone would do that is beyond me. I doubt it would ever happen to my fic, it wouldn't be worth the trouble lol but it's awful that people do it.

On a slightly different note, I was in the cinema the other day watching the pre-film trailers and I couldn't believe that MGM has funded GI Joe when they claim they can't afford to finish the third SG-1 film - you actually think people prefer watching the Rock and Channing Tatum (albeit yowza! Hottie! On the second ) rather than something with a decent plot!? I am very disappointed in MGM. I want my resolution, damnit!

I agree especially because I think it's more complicated to create a story by changing the meaning of several sg1 clips...

Yeah I remember it mostly from the days of xfiles when fanfic was actually quite hard to find and people just put it on their own websites or in webrings (and they were always ghostbusters green or neon pink or some other equally eye-watering colour! Or black text on a dark blue background and you had to alter your screen resolution to read it :s)... I feel old lol!

I've recently been going back through old Sam/jack fanfic for stuff I missed from the early years, there's quite a treasure trove though I'm finding a lot of missing live journal link and links to older defunct archives. It's a shame because a lot of the good authors seemed to have stuff on them.

I saw on ffnet that someone started a fic based on my AU trailer vid. I don't know if I should be flattered or annoyed that she didn't ask my opinion first...

Hmm I think I'd be flattered that someone wanted to use my idea but angry that they didn't ask your permission first, that's just common courtesy. The writer doesn't know if you were planning on writing your own story or if you've already written a story with those characters/storyline.

That was my impression as well but it still wouldn't change anything for me; simply because it might be a site/archive I wouldn't want to be associated with, I wouldn't have the power to edit the story and I probably wouldn't get any feedback from those people or at least be unaware of it. In most archives you can reply to a review publicly now but that option would only be available to the one who posted the story, which in this case wouldn't be the author themselves. That means the only way you'll get feedback is by leaving an email address for everyone else to post along with the archiving of your fic but that brings a bunch of problems with it as well.

Yes, your vids are excellent and very creative, which is difficult considering you only have a certain number of clips available and you can't change them, you can only change the sequence (and perhaps make them shorter by picking a second etc). Not to mention how much time it takes you to not only research your idea, collect all the clips and put together a story but also edit it into the final product.

For someone else then to just take that vid and write a story around it... well, I wouldn't be pleased. I haven't read the fic (skimmed it and that told me enough about the writing) nor do I recall which of your vids they were referring to, but it would be even worse if the fic is a literal description of the vid rather than using it for inspiration.
