I agree but I think it was mostly 1 and 2. Shippers don't dislike Kerry nearly as much as Pete (her little ship-ship-hooray retire speech at the end of Threads notwithstanding), it took her all of 5 minutes to work it out. Smart woman, very perceptive, but I think Pete was far too dense and childish to be taken seriously by fans either way and I think that's what annoyed everyone so much.

Sam needed a relationship before Jack but they could have done much better than Pete. Agent Barrett maybe? Personally, if wishes werehorses, I wouldn't have minded Jensen Ackles from Supernatural (a bit young at the time maybe?) or David James Elliott from JAG (yum!)

As a side note I googled "all-American actors" for examples of famous guys and guess who popped up? Michael Welch (AKA young Jack from Fragile Balance" - even google is an S/J shipper lol!)

I’ve been a S/J shipper for years now, but only recently have I fallen head-over-heels in love with the couple all over again. I think it’s probably because I’ve had a lot more free time on my hands since Christmas which has allowed me to rewatch a few episodes and see the amazing chemistry they have.. which in turn, has inspired me to enter this year’s Valenship. I hope!

Lol yep but in my head he's Harm Rabb so in Stargate he'd be on a 1 year assignment from JAG to supervise something at the SGC, had a fight with Mac, shacked up with Sam then realised his mistake and gone back to D.C. to be with Mac again. Simples! Two ships, one show lol! Plus, another guy in uniform as competition would have been great for bringing out the green-eyed monster in Jack and they would've probably had more moments of onscreen interaction. *starts daydreaming about a Jack O'Neill/Harm Rabb fight like the dream sequence between Chloe and Sam over Felger* - what? The girls can't have their fun?

As much as I absolutely hate Pete for Sam, the actor had a national commercial out just before he began playing Pete. (I think it was a commercial where his dog opened the fridge and got him a beer - maybe not but I know there was a dog in it.). Women everywhere were gushing about "Now that is the kind of guy women want. Great looking but not TOO good looking. All American guy type." Which leads me to believe our dislike of Pete really is for three reasons:

1) the stalkerish way he was introduced

2) he walked out on Sam after sex when she told him that because of honor/duty she could not meet his demands (despite him being a cop should have made him understand and respect her wishes). And he stomped his foot and threw a tantrum in my estimation. *real attractive there, Pete*. *eyerolls*

3) and the most important reason - he's not Jack.

I really don't see the attractiveness in Pete/DDL, his looks are very average in my opinion and that's me being nice. I've seen him in a few other guest appearances on other shows recently and I still don't see it, so it's not just the character he plays. I also don't find Agent Barrett attractive (although he seems to look better in early appearances) but he does have a certain charm, which makes him more appealing to me.

But I do agree that his stalkerish ways and his introduction could have been handled better. Just the whole following Sam to a stakeout and even running a background check (wasn't that right after they slept together for the first time?) on her was just strange and alarming behavior, especially for someone who is supposed to be a cop/detective. The fact that he can't understand and respect that Sam's work is classified is also very strange to say the least.

His character was just written so badly* and the way they tried to involve him with Teal'c's murder was just odd, not to mention how Sam accepted his proposal and hugged/kissed him while on the job. Very unprofessional and OOC for her. And don't even get me started on why he got clearance on the Program to begin with, seeing as how distrustful he is and unable to handle secrecy and classified stuff...

Granted, it was in line with Sam's season one comment about falling for the lunatic fringe.


* One other thing I don't quite get is how he was supposedly friends with her brother, who lives in a different state and has been in San Diego at least since the first season of the Program while Pete lives in Denver. I also never got the idea her brother was a cop and considering Mark's view on the military, I'd think he also had a little problem with cops as they share some similarities with the military. Then, after the introduction to Jacob, his death and Sam breaking off her engagement to Pete we never hear anything about Mark again, despite him also being Jacob's son (and they were on good terms) and being one of Pete's buddies. If not a mention of Jacob's service then at least something about a fallout with Mark after Sam's breakup would have been nice...

Yep, that would have been interesting. Especially the fact that another guy in uniform most likely (especially one that carried off the uniform as well as Harm Rabb did!) would make Jack turn into the green eyed monster to end all green eyed monsters!

I don't think Pete was good-looking at all (doesn't really even typify the All-American guy), but that's me.

Had they gotten David James Elliot from JAG or Jensen Ackles to act equally stalkerish (granted, they looked better!), I don't think I would have liked them either.

I agree on both counts, never did see the attraction to DDL but then I have odd taste, so I'm told. I can't explain why I liked Agent Barrett, he's kinda cute in a puppy kind of way.

Affinity was a stupid episode for many reasons, not least OOC Sam/Pete being given clearance/Pete being brought into the investigation etc etc. however, I agree, he had the lunatic fringe about him. Now if only Osiris had been a better shot...
