I think this is exactly the kind of thing why I say I don't think Amanda gets enough recogniton from her peers when you see the noms for the Geminis...I sometimes wonder if these awards (not just the Geminis but awards in general) aren't to some degree politically motivated.
I'm really happy for the Sanctuary peeps who got nom'ed but really, I think if Amanda doesn't get nom'ed next year for her work in "Out of the Blue" I think I will defintiely give up in believing that these awards are not on the level.
All awards are biased by the voting body's bias and unfortunately Sanctuary has two strikes against it -
1 - it's sci fi / fantasy (or whatever genre tag you want to apply to it)
    2 - it's not made in Toronto

I'm not sure that OOTB will be put forward next year as it looks like they used the Series rule (otherwise Normandy wouldn't qualify) and maybe put forward all of S3 for this year's awards.

Also, I don't know if the Geminis are like this or not, but many of these awards, each show has to pay to enter. and they pay per entry...it's literally something that you have to pay to even participate in...and when you get a show like sanctuary with not much of a budget, they potentially can't afford or can only afford a few entries while those backed by big studios have bigger budgets and you can find those shows nommed all over the place. (this is why some awards are so panned, because you see shows that critics declare to be complete and total drek being nommed all over the place while others that are better received get ignored...same phenomena you see with summer movies, where the 'winning' movie may not be the better movie, it's the one with the bigger ad budget)

I'm not saying this is the case, but it is another obstacle that independent productions face....many awards are popularity schemes with a hefty price tag

Mind blowing thought! If all 45,876 @amandatapping Twitter followers donated just $10 in her birthday month to @Sanctuary4kids > $458760 would be raised!
If you want to donate to @Sanctuary4kids as a united @amandatapping fandom gesture, just put #ATTwitterFandomUnited on the online donation form.

I had a birthday fundraiser recently and sent the money to S4K. I'm not on twitter (I know, that's a big shock to you all ). But I'm up for sending some more to S4K.

The thing I do like about the briefing room scene is Sam's comment about playing with the Major Matt Mason doll. And then Feretti asks "did you have that cool little backpack..."
Almost a mini bonding moment for those two.

Yes, he is the one male who speaks who is actually nice to Sam. As much as I hate the reproductive organs line, neither Jack nor Kawalski are professional either in what they have to say. Really, the whole scene was not well written IMHO.

The whole room was full of senior officers, and not one of them spoke up. No wonder Sam was on the defensive.

It's like when they move onto emancipation it was a partner moment to this....sam fought to be believed and trusted in an environment that often considers possessing a penis as automatic qualifications for a job...but then, in the field, she still has to deal with the same thing, this time in the name of culture. And the team learned 'dude, even first contacts can be bloody dangerous, so you need to be on your guard', because even the friendliest group can cause problems.
I've gotten the feeling that the first 5 episodes of S1 were written before AT had her talk with the writers about toning down the feminist diatribe angle they were doing with Sam, since after First Commandment she started to be written quite differently in that respect.

I liked that moment well. Considering this was the main intro to Sam (Jack and Daniel were known from the movie and Teal'c didn't get properly introduced until Enemy Within), I thought they did a pretty good job of establishing her character background: scientist and gate expert, soldier with some war experience, and even the hint of her interest in astronomy/becoming an astronaut.

My favorite bits of COTG re Sam are probably the first time she went through the gate, the whole scene in the cartouche room, and Teal'c giving Sam his staff weapon.

Yeah, while still think that line was terrible, the above is why it doesn't bother me too much, and I agree with EH-T that the whole scene wasn't really well-written. I find it hard to believe that Hammond would just sit by and allow Jack and Kawalsky to talk to Sam that way, or wouldn't cut Sam off and get everyone back on topic before they got to the whole arm-wrestling stuff.

i heard that amanda didn't submit for the gems this year... my feeling is it IS political crappola (and the toronto vrs vancouver stuff, that's sooo similar to the east coast vrs the west coast in the states)...

i'm not sure of this (any of what i wrote above), but it seems *so* many of the awards shows sometimes forget to look at the performance of the individuals, and instead look at opportunities made and connections to set up.

and yes, 'out of the blue', and her confrontation with john... she was outstanding!! (((amanda)))

One thing that continues to irk me about COTG is when they are in the room with the cartouches and Sam says the gate can't go anywhere else but Abydos and didn't consider stellar drift. She was the foremost expert on the Gate for 'pete's sake' and the writers didn't figure she would at least consider the possibility that the gate could take them to other places. She 'Macgyvered' a supercomputer to dial the gate just to go to one location. Give me a break. Really shabby writing. It always makes her look like an idiot and I really hate it. Okay hate too strong? I totally find it terminally annoying and grind my teeth every time I see it. Just my opinion.

I saw the recut version of Children of the Gods and absolutely hated it! Of all the changes they made, I only liked one - the cutting of alot of the nudity. However, they had the chance to fix the one blatent error and they didn't. Why, oh why, didn't they fix the combo enlisted/officer rank insignia on the airman who escorted Jack into the SGC???!!!!????

My Goodness, there isn't a bigger error than to have both insignia on at the same time. They should have fixed that!!!

I don't mind the original introduction scene in the Briefing Room. I loved the Captain Doctor and "I thought you wanted to be called Captain, Captain." lines. Good banter.

I remember being in awe that there was actually a show that talked about history and physics and the military and was funny and had good-looking men and it was all in one show.

                          Good start to the series.

                          Go Sam

cause they'd have had to reshoot the whole scene to fix that...and it wouldn't happen.

although with special effects these days maybe they could have tried to fix it that way

Regarding the edition version of COTG:

one thing I liked is them showing more of Sam's awe in seeing the DHD when they first arrived on Abydos.

One thing I really hated with the editing was them taking out the small part where Teal'c comes through the gate at the end and quietly hands Sam his staff weapon. That was a pivotal point for both Teal'c (showing his willingness to give up his defenses) and Sam (Teal'c handing his weapon to a woman and also recognizing her authority). It was a very small scene, but was very needed, IMO.

Another thing I didn't like with the release of the "Final Cut" is that they had Brad & RDA doing the commentary. It's apparent that RDA had no recollection of many of the things that happened. When Brad gushed about taking out the "reproductive organs" lines, RDA couldn't remember and said "Did I say those lines?" Oy! I don't mind having RDA with Brad on the commentary, but why not also have someone else who actually remembers a lot of the stuff (Like Amanda!) and can give some real input.

Thanks to everyone on the congrats! I'm a bit nervous, but also pretty psyched ... we'll see how it goes! I'm likely to be quite tired this week, as I just came home from a roadtrip to Chicago and Milwaukee (Wisconsin to home in just over 11 hours - not bad, eh? ), and now have to work the next 7 days straight b/c of the shift change - but I can do it!!!

Actually I've been saving for that pretty much since I came home from AT5 ... but now I can continue contributing to my "GABIT fund" as well as start up the "house downpayment" and "newer car" funds! LOL Hoping to get another year or two out of my current car, and am planning to be paying off a mortgage instead of rent to someone else's mortgage within a couple of years. I know, I'm becoming a grownup!

Ooh, I didn't realise that - but somehow, it makes so much sense when you see which productions have been "snubbed" in the past. Thanks for enlightening me!

I found a couple of points where that annoyed me. You have this apparently brilliant cutting-edge mind ... who misses a point that should have been considered. I mean, there are X amount of symbols, but you only need 7 (as far as they know at that point) to dial the gate, so why have the other symbols if they didn't combine into *some* location, somewhere??? Then again, in RL I find sometimes the "expert" in something misses what later seems obvious, and it takes a fresh set of eyes to hit on something everyone else has missed. Like stellar drift. So why that moment does annoy me, it's not necessarily unrealistic in that regard IMO.
