I can see the possibilities of his retiring. I think it would be logical to have him retire. The Stargate Program was his reasoning for coming out of retirement (two times, wasn't it?). As he is no longer going on missions, retiring seems like a logical step to me.

It may also be the shipper in me wanting to lose the thin wall holding back any Sam/Jack shippiness . . .
