Spoiler:
“Standard hit and run Darling?” colonel Hutton, of the firestorm Edinburgh, asked major darling, of the firestorm Manchester. “Or show our strength and use formation attacks?”
“Just call me Major Phil colonel, and formations would seem to be a good plan. There should only be two cruisers and a hive.”
“Yes, but this is a ship construction facility, I seems strange that they would only have a hive with its escorts guarding it.”
“Ok, lets do hit and run strikes sir.”
“But that would show we feared them, and that is what they want.”
“Look, you are the one deciding, make up your mind and stop testing me!”
“Hit and run it is then.”
Two months had passed and the firestorm was about to go face to face with a wraith hive with its escorts. The only two out of production, they were already making quite a name for themselves. Two 304’s were ready to join the fight in case it got nasty and the wraith had hidden reinforcements. The shipyard was a major target, and colonel Hutton was taking great pride in this. He had not been captain that long and it was strange for Major Phil Darling to be taking orders when he knew what the ship could take.
The great flashes of hyperspace dissipated as they came to a halt. A red moon was sitting above the planet like a small marble. The yellow desert of the planet was like a beach ball compared to it. But one thing was clearly visible. A vast purple array of tentacles that leached onto the planet, like an octopus grappling with prey, they attached to a main bulk that was in a low orbit around the planet. The moon was nearly twice the size of the strange ship. The vast construction facility was starting to spew fighters forth. Thousands of them came out, but after a few seconds, no more came.
“Evasive manoeuvres!” Phil said. Fire the beams into them and dry them up a bit!”
Four beams of plasma ripped through the swarm. The cloud opened up and then filled in again. It was like a huge ball of water. The rail guns started to open fire and the thudding of guns could be heard from inside the small bridge.
“Major Phil, what are you doing?” Colonel Hutton's voice said over the radio.
“Saving my ship! I’d advise you to do the same, sir!”
They twisted around and the cloud passed over. None of them hit the ships. But small blue bolts smashed against the shields.
“Will you need assistance?” the voice of one of the captains of the 304’s asked.
“Ye...” Phil started.
“No, we can manage!” Colonel Hutton interrupted.
“Shields at 60%!” The Scottish co-pilot stated.
“Keep firing and back against the Edinburgh!”
The ship sat behind the Edinburgh’s engines and covered the behind.
“Should we launch fighters?” The Scottish co-pilot asked.
“Hell no! Why would we do that?”
“because the Edinburgh just did.”
“What?” He leaned against the yellow viewing glass and looked in horror as eight f-302’s flew out of the hangar. “Colonel, pull your pilots in for the cruisers and the hive, not for the fighters!”
“But we are too close to do any damage to them. They are unmanned” Four of the f-302’s were swarmed and four beams smashed into the swarm clouds. Hundreds of wraith fighters were destroyed.
“How many are out there now?”
“Seven hundred.”
“Out of?”
“Two thousand.”
“We’re going to need help with that.” He said as several hyperspace windows opened. Wraith war ships burst out of them. They floated like beasts on a leash. The cruisers soon came in.
“On my mark fire two beams at both of them.” Colonel Hutton said through the radio. “Mark!”
Four beams splashed against the shields of one of the cruisers and was enveloped in a mighty explosion. The other four hit the lone cruiser. They slashed against it at different times and in different places. The ship looked to still be intact but a pulse from one of the battle ships destroyed it.
“Seven war ships? Man. We’re going to need that backup.”
“Right you are.”
The hive floated as if it was enjoying the show. It did nothing aggressive towards them and was slowly turning to get a better view of the battle.
The war ships started to move as the last pieces of the cruiser exploded. A great volley came flying towards the two tiny ships.
“Concentrate on the target.”The colonel said as the yellow screen flashed to life and a red reticule surrounded one of the warships. “Fire!” Eight beams flew out towards the warship and did next to nothing from the looks of things. The bolts started to cloud and if back up didn’t come, evasive manoeuvres would be useless.
Two hyperspace windows opened and two 304’s sped out. Two beams flew out and polished the surface of the great construction facility. The hive opened fire with a volley as well.
“I can’ot ‘old her cap’in!” The Scottish co-pilot bolted as sparks flew out of the panels and consoles. The Edinburgh was taking a huge beating.
“Retreat!” Just as the words left his mouth, a blue bolt flew into the Edinburgh’s shields. They fell. Another bolt broke its spine. Two more incinerated to left hangar and another went right into the bridge and out of the back of the engines.
A window formed in front of them and the flashes of hyperspace returned to them once more.
Aftermath
The ship production facility was successfully destroyed in a second attack by earth on November 17th. The war ships were too late to help and the hive orbiting retreated as the facility smashed into the planet and sent shockwaves through space. The memory of Colonel Tomas Hutton will be remembered as captain of the Edinburgh. And will be honoured with a ship being created in his name.
