^ Yeah that's the frustrating thing if there's a character you really like but they're not in it that much. Would your fave character be Heightmeyer or is it someone else.

      There's a reason why I'm Heightmeyer's Lemming.

There's also the fact that if you want to ignore what the writers have done with your favorite character, you get to bring them back!

I got started because a character was bashed for an action and I thought there must be a reason for him to have done something that seemed so out of character. I wrote "Torn" to explain my feelings on why Guy of Gisborne would kill the woman he claimed to love; got a lot of reviews that were happy and relieved to find someone else who thought that two and three were adding up to six.

So I guess another reason is to explain things that don't seem right.

I like writing, especially writing What Ifs of shows, films and books that I like where things are different than they were in canon.

I write fanfic because I'm a shameless S/J shipper with specific ideas about what happened between the episodes and I want my shippy resolution! Lol.

I read fanfic because it's escapist fun and I get compelling stories about well established characters that I feel I have an emotional connection to. No connection makes books very hard to read for me as I liked the human aspects of them and, in my experience, it's hard to find a character in a book which you can care about enough to want to keep reading.
Sam and Jack... Still the best romance on TV in years!

I've become quite a big John/Sam shipper, and I wished Sam could've stayed in command of Atlantis for longer, so that's another reason why I write it so I can explore that.

I've always loved writing, and find that writing fanfic is a great way to take my favourite characters into new situations. It's also something I just naturally enjoy. But most of all, it's put me in touch with some great people from all over the world. It's been a lovely way to make new friends!!

I write (and read) fan fiction because I like to explore possibilities that would never play out on TV, but might play out in the real world. I like exploring the thoughts and minds of the characters as I write as well. It is like getting into someone's head and finding out what makes them tick. It is different writing with an OC because I can have complete control over their actions, but when I am writing with someone else's character they pull me in directions I don't expect. Sometimes I want to coax them into doing a certain thing, and they run the other way. it is like watching a whole new episode unfold.

I'm also pretty bad at building my own characters, or maybe I just feel that my characters are vulnerable to more criticism because they come from me or they might accidentally resemble people I know.

Also, it is for the intrinsic value of the activity. Psychological studies show that if you reward children for drawing, something they find intrinsically enjoyable, they lose interest in it when they are not being paid. It's the same reason why people say don't turn your hobby into a job because you might grow to hate it. I guess some people can make the separation, though. I wrote copy for a while and noticed that every word I typed started to feel pointless when I was not getting paid. That's one of the reasons I quit. I loved writing, and I was starting to hate it.

You have a favorite TV show or movie that didn't have a scene you really wanted in it. You write a fanfic of that scene you wanted.
There is a scenario that you think would be really cool if it happened in that TV show/movie. You write a fanfic with that scenario.
You're favorite character is killed or leaves and you want that person back. Write a fanfic of that person.

Then there is my personal reason. I am sad that there are no new stargate spin offs coming. So, I am writing my own spin off and putting it on fanfiction.net

Because it's fun and my muse occasionally demands it... also my ship never got the ending it deserved after 8 years of blood, sweat and tears. I wanted me some Jack and Sam making out on the dock of his lake and all I got was a lousy fishing pole lol

I can't actually respond to this comment in any way that would not get me kicked off the forum for breaking the PG post rule ... You know how Chandler is in the episode where he bets Ross that he can go for a week without making any sarcastic comments? Oh the possibilities for innuendo with fishing pole jokes are endless!

To be fair, the Fandemonium novel writers did a pretty good job with them:

                                Spoiler:
[To Jack]"Well, not many guys can say they've dipped their pole where you have."
"I can't believe you just said that!"

                                *actual* ROFLMAO!
