Daniel Jackson takes center stage in "Animus"
The philosophical and humanist Dr. Daniel Jackson is undeniably the moral compass of SG-1, a trait that has earned him the respect and admiration of many in the galaxy. Off the team, however, he rarely has a chance to shine on his own merits, but that changes when his old flame Sarah Gardner vanishes offworld along with an entire research team. Ignoring regulations, Jackson sets out to find the missing personnel and bring them back, though the mission turns out to be far more complicated than anyone had anticipated. Meanwhile, Sarah herself wrestles with the ghosts of her own inner animus, the lurking manifestation of the male monster within her; the memories of the fallen System Lord Osiris.

"Animus" will guest star Anna-Louise Plowman as Dr. Sarah Gardner.

I actually finished it in less than a day, just going through and editing some errors now. I don't know whether or not this will translate to awesome reception, but I had a lot of fun writing it.

If the author enjoys writing it, the audience is far more likely to enjoy reading it.

(Of course, this is not a definite, but the general principle certainly holds in reverse; you can always tell when a writer is just trudging on. )

                    16x12 "Animus"
Synopsis: Daniel's old flame Sarah Gardner goes missing with her research team offworld, and he defies ISGC regulations to go after her while the rest of SG-1 is away.
                    Spoiler:
((30 second recap of "The Curse," "Chimera," and "Lost City, Part 1"))

On P2X-055, Sarah Gardner leads a research team through the ruins of an Ancient science outpost long occupied by the Goa'uld System Lords. This is the culmination of almost five years of Gardner's work, utilizing memory recall technology to piece together some of her former symbiote Osiris's memories. Ever since the creature was removed ("Chimera"), she's been trying to find her base of operations to exploit whatever fruits were bore of her alliance with Anubis, and she thinks she's finally reached that goal. This planet's population seems to have vanished shortly after Anubis's death over Earth, and Sarah's guessing that something befell them in the chaos following the fall of the Goa'uld. Nonetheless, her team was willing to make the trek out here with only SG-22 for protection, but they haven't run into anything remotely dangerous since arrival.

Working an entry terminal, one of the team hacks through a locking mechanism and opens the main door to the facility. One can't help but gaze appreciatively at the blend of Ancient architecture with the Goa'uld-style additions added over the years. The exterior is littered with the wreckage of what must have been a larger compound at one time, though Sarah's research suggests the native population's riots eventually forced Osiris to retreat into the original structure when visiting. Now, for the first time, they can get a look inside.

Pulling out flashlights and recording equipment, the team moves into the atrium, where abandoned pieces of System Lord technology have been left to rust. Turning to SG-22, Sarah tells two of the soldiers to see if they can find the building's power supply, asking the remaining two to report back to Earth. She, meanwhile, intends to follow Osiris's memories to her personal work station, and sets off down a side hall with just her tablet computer and her personal backpack. It doesn't take her long to come to the right place, an open room a ways from the entrance with a few Goa'uld terminals and monitoring devices implanted in the walls. Peering around with her flashlight, Sarah doesn't see anything of interest that would cause Osiris to prize this space over another, but then notices something on the far side that causes her jaw to drop.

Bulging from the wall is what appears to be an Ancient repository of knowledge like the one SG-1 encountered while trying to find Atlantis ("Lost City, Part 1"). But it looks somewhat more advanced than that one, with various crystal control panels completely surrounding the interface. One of her research team radios her to ask if she's found anything, and Gardner hurriedly tells the inquirer to bring everyone to her location. Plugging in her tablet to the nearest Goa'uld console, she attempts to access the repository's knowledge base, assuming that's what Osiris and Anubis were so interested in. She only begins to attempt a hack when the device suddenly lights up, and a blinding flash engulfs the entire compound. When the light fades, the facility is completely empty, ISGC personnel vanished and only their equipment left behind. Outside, the two SG-22 members Sarah sent to radio Earth attempt to make contact with the researchers to no avail, then make a mad dash for the stargate.

In New York, Daniel Jackson is standing in the ISGC control room with Dr. Talbot, going over the latest Tok'ra sensor data from the Aschen Confederation. After their standoff with Mollem in orbit over the enemy homeworld ("Shadow Dancing"), it looks like the Der'kal warlords who were helping them have turned on them. There's widespread fighting across Confederation space, and several conquered human worlds are using the disorder to revolt and reclaim their independence. Biting her lip, Talbot can't help but worry that this will spark some sort of revenge scheme where the Aschen follow through on their threat to release deadly toxins on all the major Alliance planets, but Daniel doesn't think they have much to worry about. That's the only thing they have preventing the Alliance from going in and wiping them out, and the Aschen are nothing if not patient. Their power may be about to diminish, but they're not going to risk extermination on petty vengeance. Danielle just hopes he's right, though she's glad they have a round-the-clock fleet stationed at the nearby Veniii FTL relay all the same.

Looking up, the on-duty gate technician reports they have an incoming wormhole, and sure enough, the stargate is already spinning while the iris slides closed. Glancing at the schedule, Talbot notes that no one's due back for another twenty minutes, though it could be the rest of SG-1 back early from a military readiness summit on Heliopolis. Daniel grins, remembering how Mitchell pleaded him not to come along given Jackson's habit of annoying the more-traditional Jaffa admiralty with his "give peace a chance!" spiel. An IDC comes through, reporting an emergency from SG-22, though, and suddenly everyone in the control room is serious and concerned. Talbot orders the iris opened and heads for the stairs down to the gate, nodding for Daniel to follow.

Down below, the two surviving soldiers of the offworld team come sprinting through the wormhole, out of breath and looking very much unnerved. Dismissing the defense team, Dr. Talbot asks what the emergency is, and more importantly, where the rest of the 055 research team has gone. The closest soldier unslings his weapon and reports that Dr. Gardner had told them to check in back here to apprise them of their arrival at the Ancient facility. They stayed an extra few minutes to help unload equipment, then began to descend down toward the gate clearing when they heard a strange hum and saw a flash of light from the compound. They literally saw people standing just inside seem to blow apart in a white glow, and when no one responded on radio, they ran back here for new orders.

Alarmed to hear that something might have happened to Sarah, Jackson asks Talbot for a few SG teams to go secure the site and attempt to figure out what happened. Danielle, however, just shakes her head, saying that she has to follow regulations on this one. They have no idea what happened, and by the sounds of it, that facility just vaporized over fifty people. She's not about to risk more lives, especially not that of someone as valuable as him, before they can get a ship over there to scan the planet for anomalies and conduct a thorough threat analysis. His heart sinking, Daniel protests that it will take almost a week to get to a planet as remote in space as P2X-055, and by that time there may be no hope of getting Sarah back. But Talbot holds firm, refusing to authorize a mission with sincere apology on her face. She doesn't want to do this, but the potential fallout is too great, and Daniel's just going to have to accept that.

Several hours later, though, it doesn't look like he's given up. Carrying a pack of equipment and dressed in simple but rugged clothing, Jackson arrives in the ISGC control while tucking a pistol into a belt holster. Sighing, Talbot asks why he thinks she's going to let a rescue mission go now when she didn't before, but Daniel replies that he wants nothing of the kind. He put in a request with the UN department overseeing gate travel for a short leave of absence to Dakara to do some archaeological work, and it's been granted while SG-1 is away. Eying him carefully, Talbot reminds him that she's used to dealing with politicians, and she guesses he'll be in Jaffa space for all of a minute before turning around and gating directly to P2X-055. Jackson cheerfully promises he would never dream of doing such a thing, and Danielle just sighs again, admitting she was wondering how long it would take for him to pull something like this. Nodding to the gate technician, she has the chevrons locked for Dakara and mutters that she hopes Daniel knows what he's doing.

As suspected, the good doctor arrives in 055 shortly after leaving Earth, scanning the pleasant skies for any sign of danger before heading in the direction of the Ancient compels clearly visible roughly a third up the side of a nearby mountain. The climb isn't difficult, and there's a very obvious road leading straight there, and it's not long before he arrives just outside the compound, looking down on the deserted human settlement nearby and wondering, as Sarah did, what caused such a fine community to disappear. But that's a mystery for another day, and he pulls out his pistol as he advances toward the main entrance to the site.

He moves through the doorway cautiously, but nothing out of the ordinary happens while he looks around. Pieces of ISGC-marked equipment are lying around everywhere, most stacked neatly by the walls but some scattered around and slightly damaged as if suddenly dropped. Daniel stops to pick up a broken dented but working laptop and sees that a scan of the area one of the researchers must have started is finished, showing only acceptable and normal energy signatures. Grabbing a flashlight from his pack, he flicks it on and makes his way through the hallways looking for a sign of anything that could make dozens of people up and vanish in an instant.

After going through several rooms, Daniel begins to wonder if he's missing something, since so far he hasn't found anything of any interest. Then he notes an open chamber up ahead, and sees something glinting on the floor. Upon closer inspection, he realizes that it's Osiris's amulet, which the Goa'uld used to escape Earth years ago ("The Curse"). It's attached to a small backpack filled with notes clearly written in Sarah Gardner's handwriting, and Daniel breathes a sigh of relief that she insists on keeping the relic with her. Then he looks up and sees the Ancient repository on the wall, and he's doubly sure this is where she must have been working when the team went missing. He looks over the work that was in progress on her tablet and sees that a security protocol halted her attempts to access the knowledge base in less than a millisecond. Obviously this is no ordinary repository then, as the other ones Earth has encountered never came with such severe defensive mechanisms.

Hoping his time as an ascended being has given him some access to Ancient-only systems, Daniel steps up to the repository in the hope of interfacing with it directly to find some answers. He takes a deep breath, then moves his head into position. The device activates at once, locking his skull into position for data download, but the usual flashing lights as information is sent over never happens. Instead, the crystals around it again light up, and a second flash illuminates the entire compound. When it subsides, Jackson is nowhere to be found.

He finds himself standing in what appears to be the same room, but there are several noticeable differences. Lighting is much darker, there are cracks and even breaks in the walls, and the Goa'uld machinery and crystals around the repository are gone. Stepping back, Daniel pats himself down in alarm, realizing that his pack and pistol aren't on him. They must have been left behind just like the research team's equipment. And speaking of the team, he suddenly hears his name called out from behind, and he turns to see a frightened Sarah Gardner light up upon realizing it's her old friend. She rushes over and embraces Daniel, muttering that she can't believe he's here and apologizing for apparently dragging him into this mess along with the rest of them.

(More of "Animus," see the previous post for beginning and next post for end.)

                      Spoiler:
Still confused, Jackson asks where they are, and Sarah explains that they're in some sort of digital manifestation of the knowledge base. She recognized a Goa'uld hack on the repository systems a moment too late to stop her attempted hack, and tripped the protocol that digitized her team. The crystal control panels that she assumed were Ancient in origin were added by Osiris to create this security measure, and it looks like it's designed to catch anyone trying to access the database in any way without fail. So far, it's efficiency can't be doubted, as they've had no luck finding a way out.

She motions at their digital repository and says that they've spent what feels like days trying to turn that one on, to no avail. There's no power to anything in this version of the facility, and without their equipment, they can't supply any. Following Sarah down the winding corridors back to the entrance, Daniel asks why they can't just find the representation of the knowledge base and look for whatever way out of here there is. Arriving outside, Jackson stops mid-sentence and stares, awed and somewhat discomforted by what he sees. The sky is entirely made up of digital lines and moving data streams, and there's no sun or moon to be found. Permanent twilight seems to be the norm, and the part of the mountain this facility is on is isolated and cut off from any way back down to the stargate, though the portal's clearing is just barely visible from where they stand.

Sarah explains that this is why they can't go into the database for the answers; simply put, there's nothing left. This ruined facility and desolate landscape are representations of the repository because there's nothing left inside the device but the protocol that sustains the virtual landscape. It looks like when Osiris couldn't access the information, she used Anubis's knowledge of Ancient systems to ensure that no one else would, either. Everything's been deleted but this, making this entire trip and stranding for nothing. Though he's disappointed to hear that, Daniel isn't sure that means they're out of options, and points to where the rest of Gardner's team are assembled near a Goa'uld structure on the edge of the cliff. Apparently it leads to an underground maze that, judging by the same Goa'uld-style structures in the ravine separating them from the stargate side of the mountain, leads to the way out. Unfortunately, without any rope or ladder, the drop down into the tunnels is a one way trip, and they've been debating whether or not to go down for some time now or wait for ISGC rescue.

Heading over, Daniel tells everyone that Earth won't be sending help for at least a week while they follow procedure to see what happened. While he doesn't blame them, at the rate time seems to pass in this place, they could all be dead by the time that happens. Sarah agrees, saying that they've found evidence of a large human population that was trapped in here before them... presumably the native human settlers on 055 tried to access the repository before them, and when they couldn't get out, they all must have perished. Unless they want to meet the same fate, Daniel suggests they head down into the catacombs and hope for the best, and one by one, the team jumps down, splashing into the water several meters below and swimming for a small outcropping leading further into the underground structure. This is uncharted territory, but they're all going to do the best they can.

The group herds into a wide hallway sloping down underneath the mountain, wary of anything lurking in the shadows. Small Egyptian sconces light the way as they approach and dim as they pass, and several of the researchers mutter that they're being led into a trap. It isn't long before the corridor opens up to a large circular room, though, with a sealed door on the far end. In between are twelve massive statues of deities with jeweled pedestals standing before them and a thirteenth pedestal in the central position. Spreading out to examine the figures, random scientists begin to identify them one by one, and it's not long before Daniel gives voice to what they're looking at; these are a dozen of the oldest System Lords.

Smiling, Sarah says that she gets it now, guessing that this is some sort of combination lock to open the other door and continue toward the stargate. Nodding in agreement, Daniel thinks that they probably need to press the gemstone buttons on each pedestal in the order each Goa'uld ascended to power. He can't think of any other reason all these oldest of Lords would be represented, and so the researches get to work trying to work out the precise order. Going around to each statue, Sarah and Daniel think out loud, drawing on their historical knowledge and their experiences, and slowly begin to figure it out. They run from one figure to another, lighting up the jewels in what they think is the right order until all twelve have been selected. In order, they have; Ra, Yu, Anubis, Cronus, Sokar, Egeria, Osiris, Isis, Apophis, Hathor, Nirrti, and Setesh. Sarah's team gathers around while Jackson walks to the center pedestal, takes a deep breath, and hits the gemstone there, hoping they got it right.

For a long moment, nothing happens. But then the lights on the pedestals fade, and the massive stone door on the far side of the room grinds open, the hallway beyond starting to light up. The researchers cheer, and Sarah spontaneously hugs Daniel in jubilation. The way ahead clear, they all move forward and hopefully onto the way home.

Some time later, the fifty or so humans have been walking for some time, and have overcome two additional challenges. One room involved answering questions about Goa'uld history, and a second revolved around shooting targets with a staff weapon to trigger something to smash through to the corridor. Annoyed, Sarah wonders aloud how many more of these puzzles they have to complete, and mentions that none of them have eaten or slept for days. Daniel tries to keep her positive, remarking that it looks like there's something up ahead, and hopefully it'll be an exit.

Unfortunately, the research team walks out into what looks like a massive chasm separating them from the rest of the underground passage. Looking up at the sky, one of the SG-22 soldiers says that this must be the ravine that was keeping them from the lowlands before, and they'll have to find some way to get across. Stepping up to the edge, Daniel mutters what Hollywood would have cooked up here if this was a movie, and turns to Sarah. She's already grinning at him, though, and asks if he's ever seen Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. She steps up beside him and says that while the Goa'uld probably weren't clever enough to hide a rock ledge just right, so she's going to assume there's a narrow, cloaked bridge somewhere along here. Everyone runs their hands along the edge, but the ledge must be far enough down to be just out of their reach, so they'll have to do this blind. Daniel squints and scans the area very closely, trying to spot any sign of an outcropping, but it's so dark that he can barely see.

Staring for a moment longer, Daniel decides that it looks like it's going to come down to a leap of faith, so to speak, and turns to Sarah. He tells her that if he doesn't choose the right footing, they'll have to go on without him, but she insists that that's not going to happen. Muttering that he hopes she's right, Daniel faces the chasm, raises his leg, and steps out into thin air...

...and misses. His foot never connects with anything, and he lets out a shout as he begins to fall to his death. But there's suddenly a hand grabbing his arm, then another, and another. Behind him, Sarah and her team are bent out over the precipice to try and pull Jackson back to safety, and together they manage to tow him back onto the ledge. Breathing heavily, they all collapse to the ground, and Daniel looks at them all with undying gratitude in his eyes. Thanking them for that, he shakily gets to his feet and steps back up to the ledge, resetting about a foot from where he was before and staring out at the chasm for a long moment. Then, praying that he has it this time, he steps out into the air, and a moment later his foot comes down on an invisible surface about half a foot wide. Sighing in relief, he puts his full weight on the bridge and finds that it holds him fine, and should be able to get everyone across.

He pulls off his jacket and lays it on the first part of the ledge, telling the others to step down onto it and then walk in a straight line all the way to the other side. In small groups, the team slowly and steadily makes the trek, with Sarah coming up the rear with Daniel's well-trodden coat in hand. She tosses it to him as she pulls herself up to the overhang and follows the others into the new corridor beyond, congratulating him on a job mostly well done. Laughing, Jackson says not to thank him, since, after all, Indiana Jones is the reason they're all still alive.

Now the hallways seem to be sloping up, and everyone chatters excitedly with the expectation that they're beginning to move toward the exit of this place. They make their way through a fifth challenge, this one involving a series of pressure plates at varying heights, and finally arrive at what appears to be ground level. The group finds themselves in a small chamber with tall, perfectly smooth sides, at the top of which are windows showing the forest clearing beyond. There's a door at the far side, but it looks to be sealed, and there's nothing like a puzzle or obstacle in the room to indicate what to do now.

Wondering what the Goa'uld could have in store for them now, Sarah steps into the room itself, ahead of the others, and suddenly hears a buzz from behind. She turns to find that an energy shield has spring up to separate her from the others, leaving her alone in the room. While Daniel looks frantically for a control panel to shut it down, a hologram appears near the locked doorway and moves toward Sarah. Once it gets closer, Gardner's eyes widen in terror, as she finds herself staring into her own eyes. The hologram of Osiris commends she and her research team for getting this far through the virtual labyrinth, but regrets that they cannot be allowed to leave without giving something in return. Someone here must cease to exist to pay the toll, and Sarah has volunteered herself by stepping forward.

(End of "Animus," see previous two posts for beginning.)

                        Spoiler:
Shouting for her not to give up, Daniel can only look on in horror as a staff weapon materializes in front of Osiris, which the deceased Lord takes and begins to aim. A second staff appears in front of Sarah and she grabs it, Daniel recognizing this technology as the same kind that allowed Merlin to create solid holographic warriors ("Avalon, Part 2"/"Camelot"). Smirking triumphantly, Osiris fires, but Sarah dives to the side and the plasma blasts fizzles into the energy shield. Coming out of a roll, Dr. Gardner returns fire, but the hologram winks out before the blast hits, then reappears a few feet away to fire back. Sarah shouts that this is a rigged match, but keeps on fighting nonetheless, doing an impressive job of avoiding death while keeping her holographic opponent on the move. She's obviously drawing on knowledge and muscle memory build up while under the real Osiris's control, and doing a surprisingly good job of putting it into practice at once.

At last, though, the Osiris hologram looses a plasma bolt that scrapes past Sarah's left leg, and she cries out in pain. Then, rather unexpectedly, Osiris tumbles down as well, clutching at the same spot on her own left leg. She's quick to jump back to her feet, and aims her staff at Sarah's head, exclaiming that it's over, and that she has won. Using her own staff as a crutch, Sarah pulls herself and laughs despite her situation, urging Osiris to go ahead and shoot her. She gets it now, as the memories start coming back to her. The holographic Goa'uld has the same characteristics as the real one, right down to its virtual DNA. And since Osiris at the time was in Sarah's body, she can't do anything to the former host without doing it to herself. But there's the irony of the situation, since Osiris is nothing but a symbiote. This relationship is one way; Osiris needs Sarah to live, but Sarah doesn't have any need at all for the Goa'uld.

Taking aim with the staff at a stunned and taken aback Osiris, Sarah says that she's going to be rid of this specter from the past once and for all, and squeezes on the trigger mechanism. Plasma rips through and disintegrates the hologram, and the energy shield keeping her team out immediately fades away, the door to outside already opening. Everyone rushes to see if the injured doctor is okay, but she's quick to tell them all that she's fine. Even so, Daniel supports her as they make their way through the far door, up a set of stairs, and out into the clearing. The researchers are all overjoyed, and Jackson carries Sarah over to the DHD to figure out this last hurdle.

The dialing device is fairly unique in that it only has seven glyphs, which Daniel immediately recognizes as the coordinates for P2X-055 and the planet's point of origin. Rolling her eyes, Sarah tiredly asks if this is the best Osiris could come up with for a final test, but no one's going to complain at its ease. Together, she and Daniel enter the symbols in the proper order and press the activation dome, watching as the stargate comes online.

That very instant, a blinding flash fills the real Ancient facility, and Daniel opens his eyes to find himself exactly where he was before in front of the repository. Sarah looks at him from next to the Goa'uld terminal she'd plugged her tablet into, smiling at him. They can hear cries of joy echoing down the hall from where the rest of the research team has rematerialized, and the two of them embrace for a long moment, glad to be back in the physical world. Then, picking up their belongings, they head out down the corridor to join up with the others and head home.

That evening, Dr. Gardner is in the ISGC infirmary being looked after by Dr. Caroline Lam, who wants to keep her overnight to see if there are any side effects from being shot in the virtual 055. Coming in the door, Daniel asks if he can talk to Sarah alone for a minute, and Lam is glad to give them some privacy. Sitting down next to her bed, he asks what she's going to do now that her big research project turns out to have been a dead end. Shrugging, Sarah says she's been offered a position as a professor at Harvard, but she's not sure if she wants to get stuck back in a classroom. Exploring that underground tunnel system with Daniel, solving those puzzles, fighting for their lives, that's what she wants to do. Probably not with Stargate Command, but heading out to find all those uncharted worlds and uncover their secrets sounds good to her.

Shaking his head, Daniel reminds her that even Indiana Jones knew when it was time to pass the torch, but Sarah playfully replies that she's the younger one here. Getting serious, she says that Daniel Jackson has been a part of SG-1 for sixteen years now, and medical advancements aside, his age is starting to catch up with him. He can't keep on doing this kind of thing forever, and perhaps it's time he learned to let the next generation give saving the galaxy a go. He thinks it over for a moment, then smiles. Telling her to get some sleep, he stands to go, then turns and suggests that when Dr. Lam releases her, maybe they can get dinner sometime and catch up. Smiling, Sarah's more than happy to accept the offer.

I resent the implication that Tron in any way influenced the writing of this episode

Truth be told, it was more me playing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves haha.

I very much liked this episode, as it showed that most of the challenges we experience are against ourselves. (Admittedly this portrays it in a ... hologrpahic sense.)
