I see them as a cross between the DV aliens and the brutes from halo (minus the hair)

For me it's the apes out of planet of the apes which the Der'kal most resemble. Although all of them have black fur, and there are no variations in my imagination. They are somewhat taller than humans, and a lot stronger.

I have no friggin' clue why that is...
