    Ok folks, I need a codeword/codephrase.

The scenario is, my SG team is checking in with their home base (not the SGC) via radio all they get is a repeated coded message warning them to go to ground and make no further contact.
    sigpic
Long before you and I were born, others beat these benches with their empty cups,
To the night and its stars, to the here and now with who we are.

Another sunrise with my sad captains, with who I choose to lose my mind,
And if it's all we only pass this way but once, what a perfect waste of time.

Typically that would be (going by any number of thriller novels and films) "going dark" so you could use that or something related to it - TENEBROUS, MIDNIGHT, BLACKOUT.

Alternatively you could use 'go to ground' more literally - SETT, BURROW, NEST, FOXHOLE.
And now it's time for one last bow, like all your other selves. Eleven's hour is over now... the clock is striking Twelve's.

        Going with these two.

Blackout - HQ compromised. Do not contact under any circumstances.
Foxhole - Hold current position, go to ground.

But now I come to think on it, I need a third codephrase that means "the bad guys are after you, scatter".

          Apples

          It's Castle's "oh ****, I'm in trouble" word.

Well you could combine the third and second - VULPINE could imply foxhole and fox hunt, i.e. scatter because lots of people are after you. VULPINE BLACKOUT sounds way more codeword-y too!

Do you want a code phrase that sticks out or one that fits into a conversation? For example when people are undercover the 'help' word can be something as silly as 'marshmallow'....a common word that wouldn't tend to come up in random conversations.

So a code phrase that the 'in trouble' co can tell his people over the radio while being observed that the bad guys wouldn't realize is a code phrase. SUch as
              'colonel mason over slept'
'the commissary is out of coffee'
              'they overcooked the bacon again'

something a bad guy wouldn't think twice about but the people on the other end would hear and go 'oh fudge' and know something is wrong.

Hey, does anyone know if genetic manipulations or natural competence leaves any tell-tale signs or obvious giveaways?

If you have an alien creature in a lab, you take a look at something and say 'there is evidence of genetic manipulation' or 'the animal is capable of changing its own DNA". Is there anything about the DNA or physiology that would show that there's been genetic tampering?

Well, you'd have to know what the original DNA looked like/was supposed to look like to know if there'd been any mutation or gene therapy.

In that case I would suggest no.
In a metamorphic life form, they may show up as "mutable", or they may just look like whatever the thing looks like at the time.

If the genetic manipulation of the alien creature was a scientific study, would the original manipulators be placing markers into the genes in question? I'm thinking of what Earth scientists do, marking genes introduced into plants and animals.

Would those studying the alien creature now be able to recognize those markers?

Or this is a situation where again, without the original DNA to compare against the modification would go unrecognized?

Otherwise, all I can offer is some wikipedia articles:
                            Detection of genetically modified organisms
                            Traceability of genetically modified organisms

This is kinda spoilerish, but oh well.

The alien creature in question is the genetic manipulator. It's capable of competence, where it can extract and absorb DNA from its environment. But, the team that discovers this animal does not know that. I'm trying to figure out a way for the team to discover that this animal is designed to be able to take the DNA of what it eats.

                                Hmm..............
You could have them run across and capture an "unknown beastie" which is one of yours after it has recently fed and have them discover it is you beastie but it's DNA is in a state of flux at present.
For example, lets say the thing they find has vestigial wings, and the last thing it ate was a bat. What they then could find is that the beastie wings are patterned off the bat and rather than them being a throwback, they are a rapid mutation caused by the beastie assimilating the new DNA code. If they caught the beastie in a few hours/days, those wings would be fully formed and functional.
I would imagine a process like this would requite specialised organs in the gut to absorb the new DNA as well.
