hm...as far as i have read those crypto-chips do encrypt the talking (the guy on the other end line just needs to have the same type of chip otherwise it does not work)...but well, you might be right anyway (i am no expert on this - not by a long shot)

Yes, it's entirely possible to encrypt the voice function as well as the data functions. Especially now that voice is also digital.

Intervening rock (hills/mountains can interfere with line-of-sight transmission; while being underground is likely to screw with both transmission and reception), atmospherics, lightning, sunspots, aurorae, any kind of electromagnetic interference whether natural or man-made... the list goes on.

If they're on an alien planet, the range is only so far to begin with, and there can be a convenient mineral in the rocks that messes with the radios. think the show has even used that one.

Also, sunspots (or the lack thereof) can affect a radio's effective range. From the abstract for an article on the Maunder Minimum:

During sunspot maximum high-energy protons and alpha particles from the Sun affect the ionosphere, reducing its effectivity as a mirror from which short radio waves are reflected round the world, disrupting transmissions for days at a time.

hey - got some other questions (one i have been asking twice already - and another that i got since i have watched first two episodes of SG-1 Season 9 again)

1. How many beam-weapons does an 304 Cruiser have?

2. Why didn't SG-1 ever get Medals for their work? (why i am asking? - Cameron Mitchel got the Medal of Honor as far as I know for helping SG-1 out in Antarctica when they went after Anubis - but SG-1 has been going above and beyond the call of duty on the show more then once...does the military not honor it's people anymore?)

3. How big do you think would a ship need to be to effectively use all the asgard technology (we know a 304 is underpowered and can only max it's systems with a ZPM or something similar)?

4. do you think that there is a way to make a smaller ship while still giving the asgard-systems full power (if you re-tool them for smaller ship size or mount less of them on it - like building an asgard-technology-alkesh (with maybe one beam weapon as main weapon and asgard-type pulse weapons?))?

I've always put the whole medal of honor thing from Avalon down to a drug-induced hallucination since he never wore the ribbon and it was supposedly awarded to him in a hospital bed by Sam, even though that's the President's job.

I never noticed the ribbon either. It's a very distinctive ribbon. It's a blue ribbon with little white stars.

well, if the stargate is secret, then would the president really do a large award-ceremony etc.? (and not just put that on record and let someone hand him the medal?)

as for the ribbon? - i don't know, sorry (i just thought that it was appropriate for him to get the medal and i am not in the habit of checking out the chests of military people (i notice if someone is mentioned having some special honors though, and it was shown on the show that he got that medal...Sam even mentions the president awarding it to him) - and i thought that SG-1 should have gotten it by now, too)

Well, presumably the work that the SGC does is so secret, that any decorations they win while on active duty are immediately declared as classified and locked in a secure vault in the Pentagon.

I mean, think about it. Even the guys who run the mess hall must have security clearance up the proverbial wazoo...

The first episode of Season 9, "Avalon". Sam presented it to him while he was still in the hospital after being injured in the battle over Antarctica.
