but the truth is I think the writers are sort of lost with this character so they're trying to expand her skill set.
Sheppard should have been the one helping McKay out with the ship systems on this episode but that would have left Ronon and Teyla with nothing to do.
I mean the guy can commandeer an Aurora adapt a damaged communication array and fix a short-circuit in the control chair but he can't handle the systems of an Earth ship? I smell INCONSISTENCY

seriously Sheppard was totally off on this one
I completely agree with the bolded statement. Teyla lost her uniqueness when Ronon joined the team. Other than being the token girl, she hasn't had much to do since S1. I've been hoping the writers would find a path for her, and I'm thrilled with the one they've chosen. However this isn't the first time we've seen tech!Teyla. She could read the schematics on Rodney's computer in Phantoms. She understood what Rodney was trying to accomplish in Tabula Rasa even if she didn't know how to do it. She was a whiz with the Atlantis database in Quarantine. It's been a slow build, but they've brought her technical skills to the point they are useful in an emergency situation.

And I ask myself - what was she doing during the weeks/months between Spoils of War and The Kindred. She wasn't going on missions. She had tons of time on her hands. Teyla would have kept herself occupied in a way that would be of the most benefit. You can't fight the Wraith with bantos rods, but you can with superior technology.

Smarter? Are you sure that's what you mean? I consider myself a fairly intelligent individual, but I certainly can't operate a submarine or a plane. They've always been smart - Teyla led her people and Ronon survived on his own for seven years - but now they are more technically proficient.

As for Ronon banging on the keys - I thought it was hilarious, but I didn't think it made him look foolish. He'd been trying to fire that gun for some time (finally - a weapon he isn't proficient with!) with no success. I can't count the number of times I've been frustrated with my computer (which I've been trained on) and pounded the keyboard.

I agree. I think McKay would make a great dad. He has a good support system, good role models in Jeannie and Teyla, and a soft heart under all that bluster. Take a look at his face when Teyla hands Torren to him. Mush ball.

great episode. Loved it. It was all so classic with it being on the daedelus however it was so new because of the characters adapting to the new worlds and the random alien and trying to use different things on the daedalus to help them survive

Huh. I actually enjoyed this episode.

Nothing really meaty, but a good fun episode.

I have to disagree that she lost her usefullness after season one. I agree that she wasn't that technical in season 2 but that doesn't mean she was a wasted character IMO. She still had many skills both with other races and her combat and strategic skills.

It's not fair to fault the writers or producers for her absence. Rachel was busy with her child and having her suddenly show up with new technology would make no sense as they wouldn't let a pregant woman (Teyla)go offworld without an escort.

She wasn't she was simply checking ship logs and the rest Rodney was walking her through.

Agreed I don't see an issue with that scene.

You misunderstand. I didn't say she wasn't useful. I said she wasn't unique. In S1, she was the expert on Pegasus helping the team make allies, etc. With the introduction of Ronon and contact with Earth established, she was no longer the unique Pegasus expert and her knowledge of trade with other worlds was not used.

Again, you misunderstand. I wasn't faulting anyone with her absence. I was saying that Teyla wouldn't just sit back and relax while she was no longer going on missions. She would take that time to learn - have Radek teach her or (obviously) Major Marks.

This is wrong. Rewatch the scene in the engine room. When Rodney was working on the crystal array and sparks started flying, Teyla immediately went to a console and cut the power without Rodney's help or instruction. He looked stunned that she knew what to do.

Hmm I see your point but I don't think it was a bad thing as it helped develop Ronon too.

Ooops. Now I feel bad. Too used to defending her I mistook your post.

(re: her being judgemental and self-righteous. I've never found her so - more boringly well balanced. I'd kind of like to see her throw a hissy fit.
                      I agree with the above.

We have seen Teyla gradually using more tech--being talked through stuff by and observing Rodney for example before this ep & the Marks reference. But you know what would have been nice? if the writers knew they were going to add to this "skill set" for her? When someone goes to find her in some of the episodes, instead of finding her sparring or working out, have her in her room studying the computer stuff. It would have been more "show" rather than "tell" on this skill.

And I don't find her judgmental or self righteous. I find the Atlantis people more judgmental and self righteous than Teyla. As for the hissy fit--good idea As much as I'd love to see her smack Rodney, I don't think she'd do it. But we could see her go off to her room and just let loose after dealing with him at his most annoying.

I really enjoyed this episode, and will wholeheartedly agree that those new baddies where ace.... they reminded me of the Borg from Star Trek lore. If continuity flows from this episode, I would hope to see them in the future... If they appear in that reality where they shot McKay, then I wonder if they'll show up in the forthcoming episodes... maybe in the season finale?

I'm enjoying the season so far... kinda warming to the idea of Woolsey as an addition to the cast - but I remain loyal to Carter and Dr. Weir...

It gave me the false impression that it was shorter than other episodes. When this happens it's usually because i want more ;/.
Because it was a good episode, it had it all in a way. Space Battles!!, new and cool alliens!!,the Team back together, suspence, humor.. what else do we want? Plus the fact that our favourite chars are getting more interesting , they're getting taugher(Mckay), wiser(Sheppard), smarter(Teyla) and ... funnier(Ronon)

I just don't want the existence of the kid to be completely forgotten. Although if they hadn't already done "Tabula Rasa," I would love an episode where Teyla forgot she had a son. That could be fantastically creepy.
You are certainly correct there are intresting ways to cultivate the story with the child involved. However my intrest lies with Kannan. I would like to know more about him...and perhaps through him the child as well.
