      DUET (204)

This episode is one of my top ten Atlantis favorites, a wonderful McKay episode with echoes of All of Me compliments of the hilarious Martin Gero who is firing on all cylinders here. We get jellied mice, Dr. Fumbles McStupid and, i I’m not mistaken, the first guy on guy kiss in science fiction history. We’re also introduced to a couple of new characters (Laura Cadman, played by Jamie Ray Newman who would go on to headline ABC’s Eastwick, and Katie Brown, played by Brenda James, who would develop into a surprising love-interest for our awkward Rodney), and treated to some glimpses of a fish-out-of-water Ronon adjusting to life on Atlantis. It’s a lot of fun and was, without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable episodes to shoot.

I like this episode. Rodney is just a fool, and idiot with most women.

David Hewlett was amazing in this one.

        Tomorrow, escaped prisoners?

I've watched this episode twice before this re-watch and didn't really like it. I found Cadman to be really irritating and that's all I saw in the episode.

If there was ever a case of revising a view, watching SGA with an open mind, putting aside previously held views this episode is one I really enjoyed. I watched David Hewlett instead, and found his portrayal of two minds in one body really fun to watch.

What made it more fun was the fact he had a woman in his body, and the awkward ideas this brings up hasn't been done since Farscape as far as sci fi shows I've watched go. Not a subject most want to do so it's great Stargate decided to, giving us that 'kiss'!

Paul M and David H's views on the scene from notes I took during their panel at the Creation Convention in Vancouver earlier this year:

          Q. To David- Who was the better kisser, Jewel or Paul

          A. He pointed at Paul with a pained expression, “Jewel, look at that face, it looks like a flounder coming at me!”

Paul responded with saying that David had “sandpaper lips” He looked satisfied, “I just wanted to get that out of the way, and you know the worst bit was, they shouted ‘cut’ ages before!”
Then again, was it really Sheppard all along?!

The scene with the failed rematerialisation of the mice was one of those that you can't forget, especially with Sheppard's dead pan delivery of his reaction to the charred remains.

"Now, I'm no scientist, but those mice used to be a different color."

I won't say I hate this episode. That's too strong. But this episode encapsulates what I find lacking in Atlantis in general. When I watch SGA I often find myself thinking how it could have been done so much better, and Duet is no exception.

Once again we have the team wandering off in different directions with separate escorts. Do they ever work together? And that is how this episode could have been improved. Instead of some unknown nobody ending up in McKay's body how cool would it have been if McKay ended up in Shep's body! I would love to see JF stretch a little. And it would have really given us more insight into two of our main characters and their relationship to one another. (We could have also skipped the stupid kiss gags, which I find juvenille and irritating.)

Then instead of making Ronan regress into a big dumb oaf who can shoot things but doesn't know how to use cutlery (And really, the last episode showed us a rather intelligent Ronan who was a member of his world's military--a world by the way that appeared to have been very developed and sophisticated) he could have proved his usefulness by helping Shep/McKay and Teyla go after the Wraith transmitter they needed to seperate our heroes.

Throw in a little Teyla/Ronan/Shep love triangle, because I definitely see some good chemistry between T & R that I think would make Shep a little jealous, and we have a mighty fun episode that would actually help us get to know our main characters for a change.

Take my advice: Stop watching Atlantis at once. This will not improve! It will only get worse episode by episode. And there's no one greater than McKay who will increasingly get more and more to do, be and have all the glory in one go.

Listen to FH! If you want to enjoy the show, you have to learn to semi-ignore things like that - one reason they separated the main characters is because it saved money, they could film two episodes at the same time. The times they do work together as a Team were gold for me, but alas, all too few and far between.
And Rodney becomes increasingly prominent, for better for for worse.

Still my favorite show though, even with all its flaws.

I don't dislike Atlantis or McKay for that matter; I just can't excuse all the flaws. That's why I think it is a good show, but not a great show.

I figured money and the filming schedule had something to do with why they were always separating the main characters. It also seems to be a carry over from the later years of SG1. In the early years it was a true team/ensamble show. Then RDA started cutting back and they begin adjusting by focusing on one character per episode to work around RDA's schedule and film more than one ep at a time. By the time Atlantis started this was the way they did it on SG1 so it probably seemed natural do it on SGA too.

As for McKay, the appropriate ending to that sentence should be yet. Wait till you've reached 520.

Think I may have watched this first time round at a con...

                            1. Forgot about Carson with the Wraith.

                            2. Had to smile at some of Ronon's early scenes.

                            3. The main plot well...slightly cliche but fun.

                            Solid but not a classic.

To be fair, Ronon was on the run for about 7 years, and I'm sure the Wraith didn't let him grab a mess kit on the way out, so he probably didn't have much opportunity to use silverware for quite a while there. I forget if it was in this episode or a later one where he said that the one time he stayed in a village overnight, it got culled the next day, so he was probably alone and eating whatever he could find for a vast majority of that time.

I get that. But I still think he knows how to use silverware and he also knows he's safe in Atlantis and not on the run anymore. It might be an adjustment getting back to civilization and being among people, but I think the writers just made him look too backwards.
