Ronon Dex Discussion Thread (possible spoilers)

I am not going to judge Dex till i see him but they better not take all season to develop him. Teyla is just starting to come alive and I actually saw some real emotion in LFP from Ford for maybe the first time all season. Sheppard, Mckay, Weir, and Beckett they have done a pretty good job developing. Heck they've done a better job developing Bates then they have Ford.

I guess what im trying to say is i don't care who they have as the main charchters as long as they develop them and not make them robots who have no soul or opinon like Ford was for most of the season.

Anyway Ronon Dex, can't say I'm terribly keen from what I've heard soo far but I'm crossing my fingers. I was quite happy with Jonas, despite missing Daniel in SG-1 and was a bit disappointed when we lost him when Daniel came back. I'm fairly easy going so hopefully it will be okay. As long as it doesn't interfere with the existing Sheppard/McKay dynamic in a detrimental way, I'll survive.

The Shep/Mckay dynamic is THE best thing about Atlantis imo. This Ronon Dex guy instills no confidence in me whatsoever, but if he was detrimental to that in any way, then my game-plan of trying to ignore him will go out the window.

I've said this elsewhere before, but will repeat it anyway. Replacing a nice, charming, cute young man who knows how to handle his weapons and explosives with a juiced-up hawaiian hulk who models designer clothes is just...whacked.

Fair enough, Ronan dex probably won't be a model. Or Hawaiian. But is a beefed up alien-on-the-run all that different?

I know I should give him a chance and all that. But I don't think it's up to me (a fan) to make the character work and embrace him.

If tptb are gonna step down a character like Ford, who had so much undeveloped potential, and replace him with a giant muscle-bound cliche, well it's up to them to make him a worthwhile character. It's up to them to convince us.

As it is, I was unable to warm to Teyla until the very end of the season. She was simply the sexy-alien-female who can kick your ass in a fight - even with long flowing hair and a long skirt.

It wasn't until she started clashing with Shep and Bates and tptb finally remembered her wraith abilities that she became an interesting character...but it still isn't enough yet.

It just seems that another alien, with similar abilities will completely change the dynamic of the team. This isn't SG1, sure. And that is a *really* good thing. I love that these guys don't always (hardly ever actually) agree on things and even get on each others' nerves. But the team does need a chance to develop it's own unique dynamic - and messing with that after only 1 season seems really counterproductive to me.

This Ronon guy sounds like Teyla and Ford rolled into one - that makes him unneccessary and superfluous already. Just because Ford was underdeveloped in the first season is no reason to start from *scratch* with a new character. How is that an improvement?? Build on the existing foundations, don't start a new sandcastle

Anyway. Who knows. Maybe Ronan will wind up being my favourite character.

Doubtful though - that honour is Rodney's and Rodney's alone

Now that production has started for season 2, I'm getting very curious to see promo pics for Ronan Dex, as well as a bit more info on his bio. He is sounding more and more like he could be a good character. Please don't make him eye candy! Give him some backbone and grit and make him interesting! And what I'm hearing about Ford's future, he sounds like he is finally getting good development (but not in a long-term capacity, unfortunately).

I am most disappointed in Teyla. .after LFP, I found her to be disrespectful and manipulative and I'm really getting tired of the character. I don't care how HOT she is. If I spoke to my husband the way Teyla has been talking to Sheppard, I would be sleeping in the garage.

So, with Dex coming on and sounding similar to Teyla, but more interesting than Teyla, I just hoping they move Teyla into a different capacity - off the main team and maybe functioning as spokesperson/ambassador for the Athosians (and utilize them more), as well as offworld societies the Athosians are friendly with.

The only character that should be replaced or left off the screen is Teyla, she had hardly any chemistry with the other actors (maybe because she is playing the "token alien" too much), had a poor story, omg a woman who can see the wraith hive mind, but then she gets taken over and spills all their secrets to them, plus the things she brings back usually cause the wraith to start jumping all over them. Cares more about her "family" on some random planet than the people that saved her and her people from the wraith, ignores orders when she feels like it, is wooden as a door, her knowledge of "the people she has traded with" is not very good (the gennii and brotherhood were great allies, plus the dudes who helped the gennii in the storm). She isnt "hot" and fulfills a weak combination of "token independant female", that has cropped up in televesion recently and "token alien", but without a cool backstory like Teal'c. She doenst have an independant mission that a story arc can run on, or mix with the humans (Teal'c had freeing the jaffa, Teyla has hating the wraith, wow, that is so different to the humans).

Replacing ford with some random from another planet will turn the main human team on atlantis into a joint-venture, and who knows what teyla and the alien will decided is agaisnt their interests, when sheppard wants something done. I wouldnt want 2 aliens on a team just on simple numbers, and some random alien is going to become trusted enough to server on that main "human" team. God i hope he is their as a wraith spy, and it takes 6 episodes to find that out, but he manages to kill teyla (because she has the "wraithsight" powers) before he leaves.

Then jonas quinn will walk through the gate for some reason, and we can have Sheppard, Ford (the military guys), McKay, Jonas Quinn (scientists) back on the same team, we still have the "token alien" but he is much cooler than Teyla, and the team looks more like SG1, but with the scientific and military sides much more defined than SG-1.

Who thinks Ronon Dex will keep Jason Momoa's hairstyle from 'North Shore'???? I for one would rather like to see him return to the shaved Baywatch look...yes eye candy but better than the memory of that now-cancelled North Shore. It was a guilty pleasure, that show...unlike Atlantis which is a true exciting pleasure.

I'm still having a hard time picturing Sheppard dealing with the towering Ronon Dex...especially if Jason Momoa keeps that surfer dude accent.

Personally, I think his character could be good. If everyone doesn't follow orders all the time because there conditions are different and they aren't military, that adds a dynamic that wasn't present in SG-1, because Teal'c is essentially a soldier too.

we dont want atlantis to be alien to the path layed out. we should introduce more humans freom earth. bring in more teams. the asgard should join but i will ho.d my judgement of dex until i have evaluate his character fully

I kinda like the idea of SGA having a tall, buff guy without resorting to any of our current fellas beefing up. I much prefer Daniel the way he "was" - I don't like "buff" Daniel, and I would hate to see Flanigan buff-up, but. . yeah. . bring on Ronan - we need a "big guy".

And I really don't think TPTB expect Jason to use a surfer voice.

They are already started filming season 2. If Scifi goes they way it did last year, we will probably see it the first weekend after the 4th of July holiday.

When I first heard of this character and some of his backstory I was so hoping they'd just recylce Aris Boch under a new name same actor and all. That would have been totally beyond cooldome.

Aris Boch was like the best one episode character ever and I'd love to see him again in any form.

I've never heard of the actor they did eventually pic so I can't really comment on him. I'll just have to wait and see.
