That's Sharpe's Sword. The book's better, in that it takes him slow weeks to recover, and that stupid girl isn't in it. I mean, you shouldn't really go from death's door to romping with some stupid girl and curing her muteness through the manly power of your loving, all in about five minutes.
Pine Bluff Variant. (Wow. Over ten years since I left the fandom, and I still know the names.) I would love to have seen Sheppard undercover, having to stoically endure some painful test of his loyalty.
I also love the situation from Folie a Deux, when Mulder could see this creepy monster thing (an enormous, vaguely insect-like thing, I think, that crept across the ceiling) but no-one else could, and he ended up strapped to bed in a hospital since everyone thought he was crazy, while the monster was creeping in through the open window to attack him. Lovely angsty, whumpy scenario.
One situation I love from a book comes in my favourite series of novels, The Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett.
And, yeah, I totally stole this scenario for Shep in a certain AU I wrote... I really should write more undercover!Shep, since I've really enjoyed the two I've done.

Spoiler:
In one scene, the hero is undercover and in disguise, and he becomes aware that he's been poisoned, but he can't give any sign of knowing this since it'll blow his cover. So he has to endure the rest of the evening, acting as if nothing's wrong, knowing that his poisoner is present, but also desperately drinking anything - alcohol, oil etc - to try to purge his system. Then he goes home alone to sit out the agonies, finally able to lay aside the masks and show his pain.
really?! and that would be.....fic names? please.
that was something like the 007 poisoned scene at Casino Royal....nice one!
