Just popping in... have been busy, on fic but also uni work. I felt soooo ill today after pulling an all-nighter still recovering. Been too much of an insomniac lately too... but yay for one of my ficathon things being nearly done, not so much M/W in it as it's subtle but it should be fun. It's rather evil but I blame the requester for the challlenge.

Oh and Toaster - yay icons!

I don't know if we ever discussed how they may apply to Rodney and Elizabeth. With Shep/Weir there's a problem of Elizabeth being Shep's boss as well as Shep being in the military (though I don't know if it's been determined if there is a problem with a military officer seeing his civilian superior). Additionally, there are people who seem to want Shep removed from his position, from Caldwell to the heads of the SGC. A relationship between Shep and Weir could make it easier for him to be thrown out. With Shep/Teyla there's a problem of Shep being Teyla's military superior (though Teyla isn't officially Earth military) and the fact that they're on the same team. Lots of issues for both ships.

At least there aren't any military issues if Rodney and Elizabeth pursue a relationship. Plus they don't work directly together in an away team and it doesn't seem that anyone is monitoring Rodney because they want him removed. However, she is ultimately his boss and there are potential problems with that, ranging from command issues to improper preferences.

    Thoughts?
I think there are issues, they just aren't clear cut. There are no regulations but there are unspoken rules of conduct.

It's a matter of how they handle it, what their views of professionalism and boundaries are. I'm sure others would have a problem but it's not about other people really, it's just can either of them handle other people making things difficult or would they believe they'd brought it upon themself, and wouldn't do anything because of that?

My view of it varies. There are many ways it can go and I like exploring them in fic. On show I think it would be a major problem, not sure if they could get over it - I imagine it'd be a sourc eof angst and/or plot points.

Anyway, I'm going back to reading fics and writing mine (and Kav icons! )

One thing that occurs to me is that there are no AU communities with McKay/Weir...

I quite like the idea of a community for AU (i.e. you write fics with very similar characters set in another scene/period etc) but nearly all I've found have Shep/Weir, which puts me off alot. I'm either missing the ones without pairings or there aren't any. Still maybe there could be a M/W AU or two. Any ideas?

I could kind of see something involving supernatural events and a newspaper... though I'm reminded of Superman (the new adventures). Just seems like Shep'd be a great cheeky reporter, with McKay a photographer and Elizabeth a competing reporter, or the editor. That or an x files FBI crossover... with McKay a geek and Elizabeth a behavioural specialist, cept if it was too X files someone would probably suggest she's scully and shep's mulder...

I just wish there was an AU community with M/W for once.

They would definitely have to prove more then most couples who work together that they can keep their private lives private. I think it would have to be something they would have to deal with tactfully, by not being all lovey-dovey in public.
I do think that they would try to keep things quiet for as long as possible. Both Rodney and Elizabeth are private people for the most part, and I think they would understand why their relationship should be kept hidden. I can see Rodney accidentally saying something when he was offworld with the team and then everyone figures it out. Poor Rodney.
I would imagine that most people on Atlantis would be okay with their relationship, but there are always those who have an unfavorable view of such work relationships regardless of who it is, and those who dislike Rodney, Elizabeth, or both, and would use the relationship against them. Kav is always a good choice, and Caldwell may have something to say about it as well.

I think also Rodney would have a hard time letting Elizabeth fight for control of Atlanits. I can just see her having an argument with Kav and him wanting to go in there and support her by way of a fist in the face or at least an intimidating glare - and he would know he'd have to let her do it Her Way, and that would be a big challenge for him. I think would have quite a strong 'protect my woman' mentality, and to be in a situation where it's a matter of professional respect that his woman protect herself would be a big challenge for him.
Hee! I never thought about it that way, but it makes sense! Rodney does seem the type to try and step in and help Elizabeth, perhaps a bit too often! Just another issue that they would have to sort out between them.

Me, have thought about this for a while? Never...
Ah, the plight of a shipper.

Hmmm...never heard of this AU community thing. So you pick a theme (Victorian England for example) and then fit the Atlantis characters into it? How well do they have to fit; does Rodney have to be some sort of scientist or have scientist leanings or can he be completely different? Sounds fun!

Now that I think about it, I kinda like the Victorian idea...

I'm not sure, they seem to in a few I took a peek at, but I don't know how much they are expected to. I think the persons character is meant to stay the same, but maybe social standing/profession doesn't have to?

Whew! Those fanfic authors have sure been busy this week, making lots of excellent contributions to the latest...

              McKay/Weir Fanfiction Friday!!

Completed “Just Friends” by Fanwoman. “Science can't solve everything. After surviving the Wraith attack, McKay is forced to deal with feelings he's denied or risk being destroyed by them.”

“On a Clear Day (You Can See Frustration)” by Teaphile. “Really, Rodney should know better than to open his mouth in front of Ronon. (the trashy romance novel cliché continues! )”

“Spectrum” by SGAtlantisLight. “What she had with Rodney was not one relationship, but several. The relationships shared things in common, intersected at points, but they were distinct, divided, compartmentalised. (MATURE)”

              Completed “Morwath” by McRaider.

“Without Words” by lullaby moon. “Just a bit of ship. (BYOS)”

Up to part 32 of “Saving Grace” by McRaider. “He was just a boy, who needed a home, and they were a family who longed for one more member.”

Up to part 2 of “Gemini” by shippedwrecked. “Teyla goes missing on a mission. She returns just as mysteriously, weeks later, but changed. Sheyla angst and McWeir.”

“Midnight Friendship” by MadelinBreaker. “Two friends meet in the middle of the night—one offers advice—the other reassurance. This is McWeir friendship and bring your own ship.”

And look at all the responses for the M/W fication challenge so far!

“A Day in the Life” by Jazzy McWeir. “This is one of my two requests for the Mckay/Weir ficathon and the four requirements were: Ice, feathers, a skateboard, four white mice.”

“A Touch of Magic” by sjhw_tolerance. “The return trip to Atlantis brings a few surprises for both Rodney and Elizabeth.”

“Answer All the Questions” by allisnow. “pre-Antarctica, Jell-O and a cat.”

“Chocolate, Photographs, and Speedos” by weirfan. “Rodney and Radek With bad photos”

“Conventionally Speaking” by Kokopelli24. “Prompts included a pre-Intruder story that takes place on earth.”

“Expansive” by tielan. “Radek is being expansive. Rodney is getting irritated.”

“Left Unspoken” by LittleKnux. “The challenge was to include a reference to "Trinity", Weir's POV, to reflect on Simon/Weir, and not to have it be overly fluffy.”

“Perchance to Dream” by Commodore Norrington.

“That’s What Kavanagh Thinks” by rodlox. “pre-Rising backstory, mention of Duet, a misunderstanding, a doodad.”

              “Disk Letters” by rodlox.

“Walking Through Frozen History” by rodlox. “While Dr. Corrigan tries to find Dr.s Weir and McKay, he learns about the planet -- and so do Elizabeth and Rodney.”

“Those Eyelashes” by JazzyMcWeir. “Okay, so this is one of my two requests for the Mckay/Weir ficathon and the prompt was: Post-ep for Duet. Why did Elizabeth stay away from Rodney in the last scene and what happens after that? Must have a happy ending.”

“Watching Enterprise” by Madelin Breaker. “Challenge: A decent friendship fic for McKay and Weir. Just bonding of the friend type, and I don't mind how. Do not include: No romance, not even hints of for any pairing.”

“Wormhole” by Madelin Breaker. “The four specifications include: astronomy, sugar packets, a surprising kiss, and Stephen Hawking’s book "A Brief History of Time."”

Part one (?) of “You Think Too Much” by doylefan. “An accident leaves Elizabeth’s life in danger and Rodney’s only hope of being able to help her is to try and quiet his over active brain…”

                McKay: I'm invulnerable!
Weir: Aren't you the one who's always spouting off about how proper and careful scientific procedure must be adhered to?
                McKay: In-vul-ner-able.

McKAY: I'm not crazy -- I just have another consciousness in my brain.

I heard a really random song on the radio and had to google the lyrics to find out who did it. As soon as I heard the first few words I could just picture the McWeir oozing out of it!

                    Bright Eyes
                    "First Day Of My Life"

This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain suddenly everything changed
They're spreading blankets on the beach

Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
                    Now I don’t know where I am
                    I don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go

And so I thought I’d let you know
                    That these things take forever
                    I especially am slow
But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange you said everything changed
You felt as if you had just woke up
And you said “this is the first day of my life
                    I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you
                    And I’d probably be happy”

So if you want to be with me
With these things there’s no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery
Besides maybe this time is different
I mean I really think you like me

Joe just answered a slew of questions in his thread, including NotANumber's post-Trinity one...

                      Spoiler:
NotANumber wrote: "Are we going to see any real fall-out after the events of the episode Trinity, especially between McKay and Weir?"

                      and Joe said "Possibly..."

Which may mean TPTB are thinking about doing something but are keeping it under wraps, or that they don't have any plans and he's saying that as an out. Unfortunately, knowing the way Joe works I'm going to have to go with the latter. Bummer, but maybe they'll surprise me.

Yeah, I got the impression Pegasus B was a McKay/Shep/Daniel/Jack crossover thingamy AU.

The nice thing of AU communities is that you have a basic story and any member can evolve that, no one person need develope the whole story - it's like some massive round robin. I've no idea if AU's have planning for future events, or if there is an organisational part so you don't get contradictions - though I imagine something like that would be necessary to get a few facts set up, things people can't break from so they all tie together.

I rather like the Victorian idea Toaster mentioned - could we cross the Victorian with the newspaper... though I don't think women would have had jobs as editors then, unless Elizabeth's family was rich and owned it and she was unofficially filling in for some reason. Mind you I'm probably thinking too much of Victorian england, what kind of jobs could women have in 19th Century US and Canada?

Oh and I finished my first M/W ficathon fic...it's ...different. I'm rather unsure about it, if it's too OOC or OTT, but if anyone wants to read it here - The long and the Short of it

The AU thing is an interesting idea. I haven't seen many totally AU series as I usually avoid those - never really got into them for some reason. But I have seen one or two where the setting and premise of the show stayed the same but there was some major differences e.g. Sumner didn't die in the first ep...and the show continued from there.

On another 'yay!' note, we do have our own category in the vids awards. It's a small selection but it is there

I don't think women would have had editor jobs either, unless it was a special circumstance as you suggested. I believe a lot of 19th century work centered around homemaking---perhaps a sewing business, maid work, tutoring, etc. Also, factory work was big because they could hire women cheaply.

Still think it would be fun and I would have to do some research, though, instead of trying to remember 10th grade history class.

Quite like the idea of Elizabeth as editor or something, out to prove that she's a smart, independent woman despite acquiring her position through her parents.
