OMG! OMG! I just posted in BamBam's question thread asking what it was like working on David's new film. OMG! Why does that make me so nervous? Why am I acting like a 12 year old who just passed a note to her crush asking him if he'll go out with her? I'm way too old to squee but I swear I will if he answers me.

Okay. I took another swig of coffee. I'm calm now. If I'm like this just posting a question on a forum, I don't want to imagine what I'd be like asking a question in person! Ugh! I'd probably pass out.

Getting on topic. I haven't watched all of Grace Under Pressure, but all I can say is that I'm oddly attracted to whumped!Mckay. Poor woobie.

I've started doing YunaCaps (Yuna = me, Caps = Pictures captures from episodes). First up is 2x19 Inferno! High quality caps with a high resolution, complete with Closed Captions and "Closed Captions" (made up captions to indicate McShep)!

Since this is a very McSheppy episode and I like McShep, most of the pics will deal with Sheppard, Mckay and McShep! Woohoo!

What others see as annoying I see as endearing, what they say is snarky I see as motivational. I refuse to see him as whiny (?), why is he whiny? He just lets you know that he is human, he doesn't hide it when he is scared so what? There are far too many unrealistic 'hero' type characters around already let McKay be a hero with flaws, lots and lots of human flaws. Oh and he is a hero, Atlantis would have fallen long before now without him.

Ah just my rant, but it was long over due for someone to say it.
            Hmmm...

You know I've never been on this thread before, but I decided to check it out because my love for SGA is seriously waning and I had an urge to see what people who have an affection for this character are saying, to see if it might sway me back over...

And I have to say this isn't doing it. And I wanted to be able to tell someone why.

Personally speaking, it's not that the character is flawed and annoying that's getting to me. I actually think flaws are good. Flaws make characters appear human. What's getting to me is that the constant use of this character has made me so incredibly aware of how limited the writers for this franchise are. I mean, I used to be able to make excuses for them. (Seriously. Go back to my previous posts from a few months back and you'll see I was a determined SGA defender.) Now though, I can see that they're only capable of developing one character per show: Jack for SG1, McKay for SGA. In addition, they appear to lack the ability to concentrate the time and effort necessary to make the other characters more than just stereotypes and/or caricatures. Which has really damaged my ability to enjoy what I used to think of as "My show."

What I mean by the above is that I've become aware that even when other characters are in an ep, they're usually only there to act as plot devices. In this way, these other people have become more functions than characters: this one provides native knowledge here; this one kind of growls and snarls occasionally and provides the needed "Bad Ass Guy"; this one signs off/supports plot actions that will be undertaken by the *other* characters. There appears to be no chance for any new knowledge or interactions when it comes to these characters. They exist merely to serve certain purposes, and they will never be allowed to expand out of this carefully delineated set of boundaries. Because it seems TPTB are interested only in using them as glorified props, not as fully fleshed out characters.

What really bugs me is that season one didn't display this lack quite so obviously. There seemed to be an honest effort to try to create many levels of drama and interaction, especially with the introduction of so many secondary characters, ala DS9. I see now though that those embryonic tensions have been allowed to wither and die, and nothing I thought I might see in this season has evolved the way I hoped it would.

What's even more frustrating is that I've been defending this show to friends, both real and virtual, who've been saying that I've been giving this particular set of PTB way too much credit. Some of them are longtime SG1 fans who are willing to stick around and catnap their way through Friday night's "hour two." Some of them are former Joss worshippers who I've always thought of as "too spoiled" to try anything new. I've been debating with them for months, and now I feel like I owe them an apology. Because this is not the show I thought it was going to be, and I've been trying to convert them based on false promises.

Anyway, I just had the urge to let you know what this particular former "Defender of the Faith" is thinking. And also maybe to get it out and release some of my still churning honest frustration. Not to mention letting people know that I wouldn't care about McKay being whiny or annoying, if he hadn't become the only real character existing on this show.

Because more than anything, that's what annoying about McKay. Not to mention the feeling that, with this set of PTB, this isn't going to change anytime soon.

I'm also in love with "Whumped woobie Rodney", can't explain why. Sadly the Rodney whump thread hasn't had any new posts for ages.

Wow, that was a long post lol. I think the biggest turn on for Rodney is that we all know that guy and for some reason I love that guy. I think its because I am so competitive. He is relatable and human. That and I am just a bit obsessed with David Hewlett that could be it...

I need your help, fellow Rodney worshippers. I'm desperate!

Do you remember this short interview with DH in which he talks about
                        a) his father being a doctor
                        b) that he's driving a Toyota and not a SUV like nearly everyone else on the set
                        c) that he gave up smoking
among a few other things? It was an article in which DH answered several questions, we talked about it on the thread, but I don't remember when. A scanned pic of that article was floating around, and I was 100% sure that I saved it to my computer. 100%! Well, let's just say I just spent an hour searching for it in every damn folder on my computer and either I deleted it accidentally or my computer eats files. I can't find it!
Can anyone help me? Does anyone still have that scan? Or at least the words of the article? That would be so great!!!

Ya know, I can agree with this up to a point.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some McKay. He's the reason I got hooked on Atlantis and one of, if not the main reasons I continue to watch the show. I love his snark, his arrogance, his hidden desire for acceptance, his woobie looks, and Hewlett is able to pull all that off and make it look easy. If he ever left the show I would be flung into the Pit of Despair (TM).

BUT, this is not the "Rodney McKay Show" (a gal can dream! ), this is Stargate: Atlantis. It's supposed to be an ensemble show and therefore needs to showcase more of its cast. I still don't know much about Shep, Weir, Teyla, Ronon, or Carson and we're at the end of season two. I can see how some people look at all the time spent on Rodney and think that he's taking time away from other characters. I can understand that opinion, but I also think that the writers are neglecting good opportunities to develop the other characters period (Shep in Epiphany, for example).

In the end I'll greedily take any and every McKay moment I can get, but I'm willing to set those aside somewhat if it means that the writers will truly use it to develop the other characters. If the writers don't then Atlantis will indeed become the Rodney McKay Show.

*That* is my point, in a nutshell. Have some green!

I love it when people actually get what I'm trying to say. Especially when I'm running on adrenaline and caffeine and trying to post furiously during a lunch break.

I am just so...Agggghhh! I don't want to give up on this show. But I have a feeling that I need to. Just to keep myself from potentially flinging objects at the television as the season progresses.
