Gee, I wish my muses were being as cooperative as yours are.

Sparky is on screen. Therefore, it is canon. Elizabeth is still out there. And John WILL bring her home.

              Okay, here's a snippet!

              Spoiler:
For those familiar with the plot line of "Persuasion", this part takes place after Wentworth (John) arrives in the area but before the trip to Lyme (someplace on Long Island, don't know for sure yet, I'm basing the locale around New York.)

              SGA ------ Persuasion

              Elizabeth - Anne Elliot
              John - Wentworth
              Isa - Louisa Musgrove
              Harri - Henrietta Musgrove
              Sophie - Wentworth's sister, renting Elizabeth's house
Ed - Sophie and Wentworth's brother, who lives about half an hour away
Diana Russell - Lady Russell, Anne's mother-figure in the novel after the death of her mother

              Spoiler:
John entered Sophie's house and slammed the door shut behind him, causing Sophie to pop her head out of the kitchen.

"What did the door do to you?" she asked, attempting to lighten his mood.

The dark glare that he returned would've discouraged anyone else, but not her. He crossed his arms and walked over to her. "I need some advice."

"Asking your big sister for advice? Wow, times have changed."

John smirked. "It's about Isa. I mean, I've been nice to her, and she really is a nice girl, but ... well, her mother made a few remarks and I gotta say, I couldn't disagree."

              "What'd she say?"

John sat down in one of the oversized chairs in the living room. As Sophie took a seat on the couch, he replied, "She was talking about how Isa was always by my side whenever we would go anyplace, saying that we made such a good pair." Hazel eyes desperately met hers and he sighed. "But she's practically a kid! Believe me, I never intended to lead anybody on."

"And perhaps you haven't, John. It could entirely be that Isa is reading into the situation too much and feeding her version of events to her mother. After all, there is a considerable age gap between you two."

"But of all the people that I would be interested in, it wouldn't be Isa," John retorted, and instantly wish he had the good sense to bite his tongue.

Despite being nine years older than her brother, Sophie was much closer to her sibling than many. She had learned years ago how to read him. So it was no surprise to John when she began correctly analyzing the situation. "Then who else would you be interested in? I mean, I know that Harri has a boyfriend at Columbia and you would never entertain feelings for a married woman, so the only one left is Elizabeth. But seeing as how you two haven't said more than five words to each other, it can't be her." She looked at John. "Right?"

He said nothing, only stared back at her.

"Unless you and Elizabeth have a past history, which is plausible because I remember when you visited Ed the summer after graduation, you came home with the darkest cloud over your head. And Ed doesn’t live that far from here.”

John gaped back at her. He didn’t verbally reply, but finally he let out a sigh, which was the equivalent of an affirmative answer.

              Dang, she was good.

“Elizabeth and I met when we were in college. We were the only two studying in the library one night, and the campus security asked us to sit together for safety. She couldn’t believe someone like me had a copy of ‘War and Peace’ and that I was actually reading it for my own personal enjoyment.” He shrugged. “We started talking and I asked her out. We were inseparable for the rest of the semester.”

              “What happened?”

“After finals, I proposed to Elizabeth. She said yes, but wanted me to meet her family first. That’s why I came to see Ed, so I could stay with him and be freely able to go visit her family in Kellynch. They were friendly to me the first few times I came, but Elizabeth’s godmother picked up on the fact that she and I were a lot closer than we said.

“Then one day, Elizabeth sent me a letter that said she didn’t want to see me anymore and it never would work out between us and to never contact her again. I went back to her house and Diana Russell opened the door.”

              “Who?”

“Her godmother. Close family friend. Has more influence over Elizabeth than any one person should.” He shook his head. “Didn’t see her for eight years until she opened the door at Charlie Musgrove’s house.”

Sophie was taken aback. “My God.”

“For eight years, I was mad at her. Couldn’t get over how she jerked me around like that. Took me a while to realize that it wasn’t her. Elizabeth wouldn’t hurt a fly, much less yell at one. I couldn’t understand how she had done it. When I got older, I figured it out.”

              “What?”

John looked up. “That the family didn’t approve of me, for one reason or another, so they convinced Elizabeth to break it off.”

              “And now?”

He sighed, leaning forward and propping his elbows on his knees. Shaking his head, he replied, “I don’t know what to make out of it now. I mean, after seeing me with Isa, she probably thinks I’m just a player, going after anybody who’ll say a good thing about me.”

Sophie chuckled. “You and I both know that isn’t true.”

John raised his eyebrows and pressed his lips together, but he didn’t feel any more assured than before.

So she leaned forward and copied his stance. “Do you think you and Elizabeth still have a chance?”

John hung his head. “I don’t know, it’s been so long since we were together. We’re completely different people now.”

Sophie laughed softly. Then she reached over to the coffee table and grabbed a book, one that John had left there the other night.

She handed him the worn copy and smiled. “Maybe not.”

John looked down at War and Peace and smiled.

It's a Jane Austen book, so unless you like chick flicks, you probably haven't. LOL

Meanwhile, I just passed the 10,000 word mark and am up to 27 pages. Holy. Cow.

I have absolutely no idea, but check your digital bookstore or wherever you can purchase books. If it's anything similar to iBooks, there may still be a free version out there. There were a few available.
