I felt from their conversations that they were both busy in their jobs and also John was very secretive and never told Nancy anything. Given what John is like in the show I also kind of surmised myself that he wasn't the most giving in terms of his emotions.

Good morning! I think it's doomed to rain in Florida for the rest of the summer.

I'm going to be flying to NC for a week of vacation on Thursday, so I'll probably be MIA for the week.

The episode doesn't make it clear and, given the fact that Dave took on the responsibility of running the family business and seemed more sensible than John, I kind of guessed he was older. Then I looked up IMDB and checked their birthdates (sad I know, but it was research for Life As A Shadow - that's my excuse anyway) and I found that JF is two years older than Dylan Neal. So, i watched the episode again and thought that John probably looked older too and have made my decision that John is the elder brother.

Hope that all seemed logical and not crazy.

I went back to the transcript:

DAVE: If I've got the wrong impression of you, it's not my fault. You're the one who left, remember? I stayed. I looked after Dad; I ran the business while you're off doing God knows what.

SHEPPARD: I'm assuming that's what Dad wanted.

DAVE: No. No, it's not, John. Dad regretted what happened between you two right up to the end.

Add that to the comments about how John's father's idea of teenage rebellion was to go to Stanford instead of Harvard and how his father had everything planned out for him since he was 14, I'm inclined to believe that John was the older son and his father had been planning on having John take over his companies. But John probably didn't want to have his whole life outlined and dictated for him, which is why he went against the grain by going to a university that his father probably thought was inferior and then joining the Air Force. Dave stepped up to the plate and took take of the family.

Okay. I have a quick question I've been meaning to ask. Does anyone know when was the first time John called Elizabeth by her first name? I remember that she called John by his first name in Rising during that balcony scene with their first argument. I keep wanting to say it's Hot Zone but I could be wrong. Anyone remember?

I did a rewatch recently and I very specifically paid attention for when each called the other by their first name. You are right on both counts. Rising - she called him John, Hot Zone - he called her Elizabeth.

Thank you both for answering! I never really paid much attention to it when i watched it the first couple of times. It was only after hearing him say her name in Hot Zone and the way he said it that made me wonder...Has he called her Elizabeth before during the first couple of episodes? Now I know. Thank you again.
