That's what he said in an interview I heard about at work - no source I'm afraid but he said that

He wanted to die heroically because Ronon is a warrior and also that he wasn't going to do season 6 so he's might have been killed off at the end of season

It was in an interview he did a week or two ago the person asking him questions about his character and they asked if Ronon had to die he said he wanted Ronon to go in a blaze of glory and he referenced the scene in S&R
