          I think there were a few "caveman" movies before it featuring that trope. Valley of the Dragons (1961) immediately comes to mind.

                            Cinema: Into the Storm

                            Although it is basically a "standard" weather disaster flick, it's well made, only succumbs to the predictable once or twice and generally works very well. Guess that's because it's not a Bay, Emmerich or Bruckheimer movie...
