Dr Who of course. I have wondered why GW seems to have lists (on the HomePage) at least for other SciFi shows but not Dr Who and with the recent adding of Serenity/Firefly I really wondered what the .... was going on. I am bias and cheeky.

Other than being more of a headache for the Mods (more ground to cover) I don't see what the cons could be.
Diversifying could be seen as getting away from the point of the board (which is Stargate), but thus far the forum seems to have managed fine despite a thriving Off Topic section rife with people who spend more of their time posting there than in the "on topic" areas.
A lot of threads about the various shows already exist. Subfolders would just be a way of giving them their own little "room" so to speak. I have little doubt that many of the BSG threads would have cropped up in the general scifi section if Darren hadn't created a subfolder for it, and at least a few other areas have the potential to expand as well. And they probably will. Firefly being a prime example. Lots of browncoats around, especially with SCIFI airing the series.
The SCIFI boards are completely unmoderated and as such, they attract the worst of the worst of the WORST scum of the entire internet... as all (or most) unmoderated boards do. They are cesspits of human waste because no one tells them what they can and can't do. Gateworld, however, IS moderated, and while things may be getting a little more... open, this place will NEVER be as bad as an unmoderated board. There will always be a mod around (or easily available) should any trolls try to start something.
I'd rather have one-stop shopping than to have ten bookmarks for ten different boards with ten different groups of people. On Gateworld, there's a chance of bumping into some of the same people in different sections. That makes it a lot easier (for me, at least) to form friendships. And I can also meet folks I might otherwise have missed... and still be on Gateworld.
As for fandom wars... There's no escaping those no matter WHAT. People who want to start fights will start them whether there's ONE thread about a show or twenty. And the mods will be around to smack 'em back down.

I love Gateworld, but why does a website devoted to the Stargate Franchise need to specialize in other things? If I really want to discuss Trek, there are online forums for this. I just worry that Gateworld might lose its amazing quality in an effort to develop and treat all shows equally. The SciFi forums discuss numerous shows, but their forums are a disaster. How will the mods ever keep up?

I appreciate Darren giving other scifi shows consideration here on Gateworld. It's been wonderful having the BSG subforum.
I'm rather inclined towards the one-stop shop idea... I would prefer to have all my discussions here with people I know and care about than trying to keep up with several forums. It's too much trouble for trying to have a bit of fun. Gateworld is the only one that I log into everyday... several times a day...sigpic

well, I have to answer honestly, I probably wouldn't spend a huge quantity of time in any of these subforums you've listed, but I'm certainly not against them existing. Let them grow or fail on their own merit I guess, as long as the mods are OK with the extra work.
Being in NZ now I'm significantly out of whack with most of these series - I'm only getting Dr Who now, and the rest are but a hazy memory I consider BSG my fav show right now, and I love being able to come chat with a few people about it right here on GW - don't spend a LOT of time in that subforum, but it's nice to be able to. I certainly wouldn't bother joining another new forum to discuss it.

While B5 and Farscape are incredibly great shows I don´t believe that shows that are over deserve their own forums, there just isn´t that much to talk about. The worst thing that can happen is if each forum becomes highly specialised and only a few individuals go into each and thus the discussions become short and between just those few members. It´s better to have just one place to discuss all such things, make the official policy that it´s ok to make threads discussing anything regarding those shows.
Now as for shows that are still going on I´d like to see a Lost forum, this show is great and is virtually made for forum speculations.

Thanks all for the feedback! My inclination is to only create dedicated forums for those shows that are still in active production (including Firefly, since it has a big movie coming out this month). As much as I think series like B5 and Farscape are some of the best genre TV ever produced, the number of threads for them right now reflects that there isn't a ton to actively talk about.
Our goal is to find that perfect balance between too many folders (where threads sit for days or weeks with no new replies) and too few (where it's hard to find things that interest you, and threads are huge and frequently falling off the first thread listings page).
