      In no particular order:

      Alien and Aliens
      Terminator 1 and 2
      Blade Runner
      The Matrix
The Thing (John Carpenter version) - a bit gory but true to original written story.
The Blob (Steve McQueen version - not the remake). Cheesy effects but gave me nightmares for years as a kid.
      12 Monkeys
      Day of the Triffids
Planet of the Apes (Charleton Heston version)

All the '50's giant, atomic mutated creatures on the loose films.

When all else fails, change channels.

In no particular order and bearing in mind that some can be considered to be only loosely SF and not necessarily the ones I think are the best films. Except for the first film on the list, which IMHO is the greatest SF film of all time.

        1. The Day the Earth Stood Still
        2. Blade Runner
        3. 2001
        4. Forbidden Planet
        5. Star Wars (I recall when the first film was simply called Star Wars...)
        6. Buckaroo Bonazi Across the Eighth Dimension
        7. Aliens
        8. Jason and the Argonauts
        9. The Terminator
        10. Brazil

Honourable mentions are many: Tron, Galaxy Quest, 12 Monkeys, amongst many others.

In no order, this is what I can remember

          1.) Dune - just awesome
2.) The Matrix - (The first one) simply one of the best movies ever.
3.) Star Trek: First Contact - best Star Trek movie of the bunch
4.) The Fifth Element - Just awesome. So bad it's good, really good.
5.) Independence Day - Will Smith, enough said.
6.) Armageddon - so intense I was tense for the whole time I first saw it, as well as the other 3 times.
          7.) Gattaca - Quietly fascinating
8.) Minority Report - simply good.
9.) The X-Files - Cant believe no one mentioned it.
10.) X-Men 2 - The first was good, the second is better and that alone is an accomplishment

As a testament to their greatness I've watched these all over and over again. And I almost forgot, shame on me!!! Spaceballs! My absolute favorite.

            1. Primer
            2. Bladerunner
            3. Pi
            4. The Day The Earth Stood Still
            5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
            6. Aliens
            7. Alien
            8. The Thing
            9. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
            10. 12 Monkeys

If you haven't seen Primer yet, drop what you're doing and rent the dvd. If it's not available at your local rental shop, buy it from Amazon. It's the best time travel film I've ever seen, and I'm a pretty harsh critic.

SGC... I think you and I and a few others are the only ones that think that the entire trilogy was any good... I really thought The Matrix Reloaded was very clever myself... *sigh*

My problem with II & III was that they were like Mission Impossible. Set action sequences that went on for far too long, punctuated by little story. Had they just gone with the story rather than the foo, then it would have been a lot better. I'm getting Neo's coat in Reloaded made in red velveteen, though.

I loved all 3 of the matrixes, although I though the first was the best. But I thoroughly enjoyed the entire trilogy.

For all of us who enjoyed Galaxy's Quest's salute to Trek, Gate, and the like, I would recommend The Lost Skeleton of Cadavera as a tribute to B movies -Be warned: you'll be sterilized with fear!
                          Gracie

A Cherokee elder sitting with his grandchildren told them,
"In every life there is a terrible fight – a fight between two wolves.
One is evil: he is fear, anger, envy, greed, arrogance, self-pity,
resentment, and deceit. The other is good: joy, serenity, humility,
confidence, generosity, truth, gentleness, and compassion."
A child asked, "Grandfather, which wolf will win?"
The elder looked the child in the eye. "The one you feed."

I'm highly amused, Noo, by your selection of Plan 9 from Outer Space in your Top 10... But looking at all your other choices, I get the feeling that you seem to enjoy the lighter side of sci-fi...

I wrote in my review of Troy (Worst. Movie. Ever) that Troy was worse than Plan 9, because at least Plan 9 had the advantage of it's lead dying halfway through filming. In Troy, the audience had no such luck.
