It's a Doctor-ism. Rory does try to correct him at least once. In fact, right at the very end, doesn't even the Doctor use "Mr & Mrs Williams" or similar?

Are we going to have to down-scale the end-of-series finales in the future? We began nu-Who with destruction of Earth, then graduated to enslavement/destruction of Earth, subjugation of Earth, destruction of the entire universe, the end of Time, destruction of the universe (again) and, most recently, the end of Time (again). We seem to have hit the back-wall. Something smaller perhaps?

With all of the budget cuts at the BBC we'll be lucky if they don't pull a "Third Doctor" and exile him to Earth again.

YES please, we need the finales to be brought back into sensibilities... Has been one of my biggest gripes with the new series... certainly hasn't helped the whole "I can't have another companion because they'll just die/etc" issue that keeps cropping up.

Earth/universe threatening stories were not ALL that common in the old series... certainly not every season finale... but now it's every season, and it's just losing any impact.
