Moffat on the Doctor/Companion Relationship for Series 9

    http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/moffat-...es-9-69627.htm

Steven Moffat has spoken about his plans for the Doctor/companion relationship in Series 9, whoever that companion may be. Though his comments may give Clara fans hope.

Moffat is asked by SFX magazine what elements he plans to build on in Series 9 and he replies: “Obviously Peter and Jenna. Well, if Jenna’s in it… [laughs].”

He continues: “Just the depth of that companion relationship. We took the Doctor/companion relationship to a place that’s just more real, much more damaging and with more consequences. And whoever the companion is, you want to continue that idea. It can be a thrilling, exciting relationship but actually it can be a dangerous one too. That felt quite powerful and potent.

He adds: “What we did this year felt like what it would be like if a young girl got into a very intense friendship with an older time traveller. It’s not the romantic version, it’s not the thwarted romantic version, it’s not the friendship version, it’s not the fairytale version or the imaginary friend version. It’s probably the version that would actually happen.

“And when you’re a few years into the show, once you’re actually secure in its fundamentals, you can do that. You can actually play it out as if it’s real – often exciting, sometimes a bit dangerous.”

'Doctor Who': Steven Moffat hasn't closed the door on River Song or Jack Harkness
            http://www.zap2it.com/blogs/doctor_w...rkness-2014-12

            By Chris E. Hayner

If you're a "Doctor Who" fan, chances are there's a certain character you'd like to see return to the TARDIS for another adventure at the Doctor's side. When a fan-favorite character leaves the show, it's only natural to want more. Unfortunately, sometimes it's just can't happen.

However, when it comes to River Song (Alex Kingston) and Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), it just might be possible. Zap2it spoke with "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat about a return for either character. While it doesn't sound like something in the works at the moment, anything really is possible.

"It's never, ever closed off. It's all about 'Do you have a story that's worth it?'" Moffat says. "Unless you've got a story that is absolutely informed and invigorated by their presence, just bringing a character back in an ordinary story won't do."

While some fans might be fine with bringing either character back for a random guest appearance, Moffat makes a great point. "Both River Song and Jack Harkness are massive characters in 'Doctor Who' mythology," he notes. "Their returns would have to be seismic, not routine."

Giving them anything less would be a disservice to the characters and the actors who brought them to life. Besides, it's better to let them be missed than wear out their welcome, right? "Sometimes you have to know when a story's over, you do," Moffat says. "One of the things you always want to say is 'leave them wanting more.'"

Still, perhaps the stars will align one day in a future season and Whovians around the world will get to see River and Jack one more time. That would be something special. Now if only can Moffat can figure out a way to get them on screen at the same time. The Doctor wouldn't know what to do with himself.

I wouldn't care if he brought River back, but Jack Harkness definitely deserves a return(hoping that Moffat won't reverse his character back to how he was when he originally wrote him) after so long.
              I'd love to see a Jack/12 team-up.
I can just imagine 12 going into a cafe or something and asking him: "I've got a job. You interested?"
              "Sure."
              Cue toothy grin: "Fantastic."
"I have never understood why it should be necessary to become irrational in order to prove that you care... or why it should be necessary to prove it at all."

The Doctor has been voted the greatest sci-fi character of all time in a BFI poll.

Thousands took part in the survey, with the Time Lord beating Alien's Ellen Ripley to the top spot by just 110 votes.

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader from Star Wars came in third place, while Kerr Avon from the 1970s BBC series Blake's 7 came in fourth.

Firefly's Captain Malcolm Reynolds came in fifth, Babylon 5's G'Kar came sixth and HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey is in seventh place.

Harrison Ford characters Rick Deckard (Blade Runner) and Han Solo (Star Wars) are in eighth and ninth place respectively.

Star Trek's Spock is in tenth place.

19% of votes were cast for alien characters, while humans received 67% and robots/computers received 14%.

Glad to see that the Doctor won, but I am also inordinately pleased to see that Avon came fourth. Not bad for a 30 year old sci fi show.

Children vote for the Doctor to appear on banknotes

                                http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2014/12...ce=twitterfeed

The Yorkshire Building Society undertook a survey in November to discover who children would like to see on new banknotes, with the favourite among the 2000 7-16 year olds wanting it to be the Doctor!

A quick trip in the TARDIS to the future would reveal that a new face has regenerated on to British banknotes, if the nation’s children had their way.

The Doctor has been chosen as the face of future currency in a survey of seven to 16-year-olds conducted by Yorkshire Building Society to mark its 150th anniversary.

The Time Lord from Gallifrey was the overwhelming favourite to be featured on the next banknote with one in six children (17%) selecting him. Mum and Dad were the next most popular choice with just over 10%, followed by Cheryl, One Direction and Wayne Rooney.

Other answers given for the survey of 2,000 children included Radio 1 breakfast DJ Nick Grimshaw, Winston Churchill, Stephen Hawking and Sherlock Holmes.

If the Doctor – who is currently played by Glasgow born actor Peter Capaldi - was to appear in his current incarnation on the note, he would be the third Scotsman to appear on a Bank of England note.

Eighteenth century economist Adam Smith became the first Scotsman to feature on an English banknote in March 2007 when he appeared on the new series of £20 notes issued by the Bank of England.

Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer, James Watt, was the second to appear in 2011 on a new £50 note.
Tanya Jackson, Head of Corporate Affairs at Yorkshire Building Society, said:
The results from our survey show just how popular the iconic character of the Doctor is to children.

It is a happy coincidence that last year Doctor Who celebrated its own milestone anniversary with the programme reaching its 50th year and Yorkshire Building Society has also stood the test of time as we have been celebrating our 150th birthday this year.
In an alternative universe the Doctor has already had that privilege ... fake notes created for a scene in the 2006 Christmas Special The Runaway Bride where a cashpoint spewed out lots of money included the image of the tenth Doctor as played by David Tennant on the "£10" notes (with then-producer Phil Collinson adorning the "£20" notes).
