Jack had to tell Ianto because Ianto deals with all the paperwork and covers up the dirty jobs. (Not *those* kind of dirty jobs - minds out the gutter!) Ianto takes care of logistics and stuff or would be able to cover for Jack when he went to the island and if you're going to tell anyone, it would be Ianto. I don't think he told the others in case they had the same reaction as Gwen and wanted to help them. Owen especially, as he's a doctor. He didn't want them to see the horrific effects being taken by the rift had.

but it seems that it would only have been a matter of time before computer wizz tosh discovered the negative spike, and it just seems obvious that the rift would take ppl coz how would it dump ppl if it didn't take them from someplace first?

and if owen wanted to help, why not let him? or at least let him pick the team of specialists he thinks would be best suited to looking after the poor soles. it just seems to me another one of those plot devices that are only used to get a story.

i don't think Jack told Ianto at all... i mean, esp after watching Fragments, Jack would have kept a lot to himself... work against the system by working within it... Ianto had to do the same thing while he was hiding Lisa... not to mention since he takes care of all the admin stuff, he would know what's out of place yadda... so Ianto could have easily found out about the island on his own... and then when gwen found it, Jack knew she wasn't smart enough to find the actual island by herself even if she and tosh did find that the rift was taking people... so he easily deduced that Ianto figured it out and sent Gwen his way so she would just shut up about it... quite frankly, that's the only way it works in my mind...
