How do cloaking device in trek work?

Do they just cover the ship, sort of like a shrink wrapped bag over it, or do they create a bubble around the ship, like a warp drive does?

I don't think it's ever been made specifically clear. Though if you watch the VFX of the cloaked Bird of Prey in Star Trek III, that appears to support the 'shrink-wrapped bag' line of thinking.

Ahh okay. The cloaking device has always been one of those bits of tech that's always interested me.

Come to think of it, Star Trek VI also lends credence to the 'shrink wrap' theory as well.

Notice how the glow of the torpedo only illuminates where its light hits, rather than illuminating the inside of a bubble.

From nearly 3 years ago, and that's just what the public has been told. Three years later, imagine with the classified military usages of it could be.

Oooooo! I know they've made ir cloaks for tanks that can't be seen by thermal imagers, but a totally invisible cloak to the naked eye would be epic!!!!
