I love Stargate, and I love BSG. I think there's a lot of things that SG could learn from BSG. That said, I have no idea where people are getting the comparisons from. Acting is different, characters are different, characterizations are different, the storytelling is different, the cinematography is different, etc.

IMO the show screamed BSG. The writers obviously wanted to capitalize by luring in BSG fans that might not be familiar with Stargate. I have no problem with unruly military characters, but they do not belong on a Stargate show. Stargate military personnel should be the creme of the crop, not like the bunch of yahoo's I saw in the premiere. That opening scene where the miltary guy is screwing one of his fellow soldiers also screamed BSG and IMO does not really belong or fit on a Stargate show. Just way to many paralells for my taste. With all that being said, I will continue to watch for the time being.

lolol, well said brother Fifth. I got the feeling I was watching a BSG episode as well. Other than the nerdy video game playing MIT drop-out character, I didn't see to much to grab on to in that first episode. The flashbacks were annoying, as was the editing. But let's not forget that most pilot episodes are full of these types of glitches. I'm not sure if I am going to like this new "edgy" type of Stargate show. So I will wait until the end of the season 1 before I make a final judgment.

I'm not sure that 'The Enemy Within' or 'Emancipation' were particularly good selling points either

Maybe not Empacation but I liked The Enemy Within. And The Broca Divide (which came after Empactation) was quite good.

I stayed up late last night and watched SGU (I will give another re-watch later today). There were a couple things I liked about it, and more than a few things I couldn't stand about it.

What the heck happened to disciplined military personnel?, it was embarrassing they way they portrayed them (can you say BSG) . And then there is the flash-back sequences that also screamed BSG (I'm aware that they used the flash-backs to set-up the storyline and introduce the characters), but if this show turns into "SGBSG" I am going to dump it like a load of manure.

we can all agree about the BSG feel to the show. my brilliant better half pointed out the return from commercials with a shot of the destiny to bsg music was an obvious link! the sex scene 21 minutes into the show (yes I checked) was also very bsg and setting up the triangle with her (didn't catch the horribly overacting porn chick's name), scott and chloe --- can we say soap????? eli's recruitment was straight out of "the Last Starfighter" (1984)-- i am sure you gentlemen remember that (horrible) teen scifi movie! Dr. Rush of course is the evil Dr. Smith from lost in space..... is there any cliche they won't use?

I agree about the horrible portrayal of the military...obviously they don't have military advisors this time around. (is waiting for Greer to shoot rush!) and I'm sorry... didn't like RDA's jack at all this time around.


I lasted 1 hour and 14 minutes last night (flipping through other shows too) and rewatched the recorded version with hubby today.... nope not must see tv at all! more like..."No! don't make me watch it!"

That interest might change if the characters peak your interest

The flashbacks were kind of like Tabula Rasa from SGA. They start with the problem and slowly show us how we came to the problem.

Well none of the characters peaked my interest in the trailers and usually there's at least one that catches my eye *shrugs*

I usually know if i'm gonna be able to get into a show after the first few eps. I tried to give Dollhouse a fair change, I even got up to ep 6 or 7 and every week I was getting less motivated to watch, I only got to ep 2 of True Blood (actually I think it was ep 1 and a half), I got through almost the whole season of Lost Yep that's a lot of wasted time i'll never get back

That was my immediate reaction too! I haven't seen this being used since 'The Last Starfighter', so I felt I could let it go on seeing it SGU! I really took to Eli's character, so I'll be in the quite forgiving camp as far as he goes now! I've gone all maternal with him I think.... LOL! Our minds do work alike too much sometimes, lol, I couldn't help thinking of good old 'evil' Dr Zachary Smith either on seeing Rush in action!

But....but, Jack in his 3 star general's uniform! Got to love that, I know I did!

I've never seen BSG, no interest in it whatsoever, so I haven't got it to compare to SGU. I'll just take SGU as it comes, so far I'd like to see more! Unfortunately the 'sex' scene ended up being tucked in as a, 'have to put some sex in' our new show thing. Turned out just as bad as when it was reluctantly done with the nudity scene in SG-1's pilot!

If the SGU writers manage to create this character driven show they say they want to do, then this sort of thing won't be done badly and be part of the show, instead of an 'awkward' thing they feel they have to put in! That's my only reservation about doing 'sex' in Stargate! It always seems to come across as something really awkward. DS9's writers had no problems with relationships, so any more 'overt' references just fit in. I hope the Stargate writers can take a leaf out of DS9's character writing book,and give us some well rounded characters that do this act from time to time....or a lot, depending on the character of course!!! I just hope they put it into context, not just because they feel they 'have' to!

Well the wife and just finished watching the SGU premiere. And there are some things I really like about it and some things I found pretty lame. I was no fan of SGA, but there premiere was much better than what we got last night.

Be nice. I was pretty excited about this premiere while totally avoiding all spoilers, so I didn't go into watching it with a predetermined opinion. With that being said, over-all I found it was a let down (not a big let-down, there is potential). Now I'm sorry if this doesn't jive with your point of view, but it seems like you are the one in the minority over how great you thought it was.

Little Green Men is one the best Ferengi episodes. It's just plain fun that is actually quite funny as well. It turns out Quark, Rom and Nog were the Roswell aliens...need I say more? The writers excel in keeping it amusing throughout. The script is sharp and witty and the costumes and sets look great. There's really not much to say about it, its just mindless fun that leaves you smiling from beginning to end

HEY!!! that's Dr. negativity to you! I was hoping for a pleasant surprise but 21 minutes in I realized I was watching a cross between Stargate:BSG and Stargate:90210 !
