Sanctuary and the Secrets of Evolution

Sanctuary is no ordinary online science fiction series. Its creator is Damian Kindler, a writer and producer for both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis, and stars Stargate's Amanda Tapping. Tapping is joined by costars Robin Dunne, Emilie Ullerup, and Christopher Heyerdahl and a guest stars from many other British Columbia-filmed science fiction series, including the Stargates, Battlestar Galactica, The Dead Zone, Smallville and The 4400. The plot is a mash-up of horror and science fiction:

What makes it SF rather than fantasy to me is that it's set on an alternate Earth where the monsters are more biological than supernatural.

Eight available-for-purchase episodes are available online, and you can watch low-res versions of the first four episodes for free. If you enjoy those, you'll be pleased to know that the SciFi channel has committed to a 13-episode season.

    I'm looking forward to it!

What's Coming Up In Genre TV?

The Writers Guild of America strike has ended, and the networks are making their plans for the remainder of the season and beyond. And because of the strike, we didn't have a normal pilot season.
Instead, the networks started ordering series directly instead of ordering a pilot, or even ordered foreign series.

Here's a look at the new series coming to your screens in the next twelve months or so.

          **snippage**

"Sanctuary," the Web series picked up by the SciFi Channel, stars Amanda Tapping as Dr. Helen Magnus. Magnus runs the Sanctuary, which is a home to various creatures of myth and legend, who must be tracked down and protected. Dr. Will Zimmerman, played by Robin Dunne assists her in her quest.

It's cheap to produce, and airs on SciFi. It's a match made in heaven. It also has "Stargate SG-1" connections, which will bring in a ready-made audience. This show could have legs.

I have just got back from the Sci Fi Channel's 2008 Upfront and the new year looks very exciting. Upon arrival, the press was treated to an interview with the cast of Battlestar Galactica along with co-producers Ronald Moore and David Eick. They were introduced onstage by Mark Stern, the Sci Fi Channel's executive vice president of original programming.

            **snippage**

            But wait. There's more...

The cast of Eureka was there as well. I don't really watch the show and didn't get a chance to talk to them, but it was exciting that they were there.

            **snippage**

Also, after talking for a moment with Mark Stern, he described the new Sci Fi series called Sanctuary. It stars Amanda Tapping and is done entirely with a green screen virtual set (such as with the movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow). It's their first attempt (or indeed, any major networks first attempt) at a television-quality series done specifically for the web. It sounds like a great experiment. If it works, it could be the gateway to more affordable science-fiction entertainment.

Sanctuary - About.com: Tapping on Atlantis and Sanctuary:

Notes from the Sci Fi Channel 2008 Upfronts

              From Mark Wilson,

The stars of Sci Fi's biggest shows turned out for the Sci Fi Channel's 2008 upfront party on March 18. The Morgan Library on Madison Avenue was the cozy venue, making the party touting the network's

              Tapping on Atlantis and Sanctuary

Alongside the full casts of Eureka and Battlestar Galactica, Amanda Tapping looked a little lonely as the sole representative of the Stargate franchise. In fact Tapping was doing double duty, as she's splitting her time these days between Stargate Atlantis and Sanctuary, the web-originated Victorian-era fantasy series created by Stargate writer Damian Kindler that was picked up by Sci Fi in January. Tapping told me she thought Sanctuary was a great fit for Sci Fi, saying that the new series was turning out "even better than I expected," partly because the network has a real knack for this kind of material. She does seem happy to be playing a maverick like Helen Magnus, someone who's "the opposite of Carter" in many ways.

Regarding her reduced involvement in season 5 of Atlantis, Tapping said she didn't know how many episodes she was in this year: she filmed the start of the season with the Atltantis crew, then switched over this month to the 13-episode run in front of the green screens with Sanctuary. Once she's done there she returns to Atlantis to film at least part of the end of season 5. When I asked if she's ever get to do a show that wasn't on Sci Fi, she laughed and said, "Sci Fi pretty much owns my ass."

                Sanctuary Is All New

Amanda Tapping, star and executive producer of SCI FI Channel's upcoming new series Sanctuary, told SCI FI Wire that the show will differ significantly from the Web series on which it is based.

                **snippage**

"The fact is it's already evolving," Tapping said in an interview at the channel's upfront presentation to advertisers in New York earlier this month. "Our pilot that we're now going to start shooting is very different from what you've seen on the Web. But [Magnus] is still this crazy character. She's 157 years old, and she's very eccentric and very sexy and very unapologetic. I love it."

                **snippage**

"It gives us a good home base," Tapping said. "SCI FI is the perfect fit for this show and for me, because I have worked with the network for so long. It made so much sense to stay with this network. They understand the genre. They understand the fans. And now they understand multimedia platforms in terms of utilizing social networking, which is what our company is all about. So it's a perfect fit." Sanctuary will premiere later this year.

Amanda Tapping, star and executive producer of the upcoming SCI FI Channel series Sanctuary, told SCI FI Wire that she's an exceptionally hands-on producer.

"I am so hands-on that I wish I was just an actress again," Tapping said in an interview at the network's upfront presentation to advertisers in New York earlier this month. "I have been in charge of making sure that budgets get pulled together, getting our financing together, approving cast, everything. I'm way hands-on. I need to back off and just focus on the character for a while."

                      SANCTUARY

For years, fans have followed the career of Amanda Tapping, Samantha
Carter on STARGATE SG-1 and now STARGATE ATLANTIS. She will have a new role as star and executive producer of SCI FI's upcoming new series
SANCTUARY. During a recent interview, Tapping said that the show will
differ significantly from the Web series on which it is based. SCI FI has ordered 13 episodes of SANCTUARY, which was created by Damian Kindler and co-written by Martin Wood, who, like Tapping, are both veterans of STARGATE SG-1 and STARGATE ATLANTIS. Tapping will reprise her role as Dr. Helen Magnus, an apparently immortal doctor and scientist who seeks to locate, aid and protect supernatural creatures. To adapt the high- definition digital Web series for television, SCI FI has ordered up a new pilot.

"The fact is it's already evolving," Tapping said. "Our pilot that we're now going to start shooting is very different from what you've seen on the Web. But [Magnus] is still this crazy character. She's 157 years old, and she's very eccentric and very sexy and very unapologetic. I love it." Tapping, who will continue to guest star on ATLANTIS as Col. Samantha Carter, said that the transition to television opens up all sorts of possibilities for SANCTUARY. So it's a perfect fit." PRESS RELEASE

                        SCI FI ENTERS 'SANCTUARY'

Production Begins on 13-Episodes of Live Action/CGI Scripted Drama Starring Amanda Tapping

New York, NY April 1, 2008 Production begins this month on SCI FI Channel's groundbreaking new original series Sanctuary. Shot in the style of the feature films 300 and Sin City, Sanctuary is the first television series to feature live-action actors against primarily virtual sets. The 13-episode season of this one-hour drama is slated to debut this fall.

There are creatures that live among us, abnormal offshoots of evolution that live in the fringes, unseen by most. Some are dangerous, but most are benign, becoming violent only because they are threatened by an ever-encroaching world. We consider them monstrous figments of our imagination, but the beautiful, enigmatic Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) knows that they are real. She has dedicated her life to tracking these mysterious creatures: harboring the benign ones, and protecting the world from the dangerous ones. She is joined in this quest by her fearless daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup), quirky tech-whiz Henry, and new recruit Will (Robin Dunne) a brilliant young psychiatrist/profiler with a knack for finding the strange and unusual. Using their unique combination of instinct, medicine and cutting edge technology, this eclectic team must take on the creatures that lurk in the corners of our civilization.

Sanctuary, which began online as the world's first high-definition sci-fi Web series, is a live-action production shot entirely against a green screen. In this revolutionary approach to television, 90% of the sets are CGI, allowing the writers to create an expansive world un-tethered from the normal television budget restrictions.

Series creator Damian Kindler (Stargate SG-1) and producer/director Martin Wood (Stargate Atlantis) are Executive Producers and showrunners on Sanctuary. Sam Egan (Jeremiah, The Outer Limits, Masters of Science Fiaction) and Tapping also serve as Executive Producers.

Sanctuary will be produced by Stage 3 Media, in association with SCI FI Channel. Tricon Films and Television are worldwide distributors of the series.

                          NOTHING BUT GREEN SCREEN

                          FIRST ALL-SPECIAL EFFECTS SERIES

                          By DON KAPLAN

The Web-only "Sanctuary" is being made for TV.

                          April 4, 2008 --

THE hottest movie technology around - the special effect that has made movies like "300" possible - is coming to TV.

A new Sci Fi channel series "Sanctuary" will be the first television show to be filmed almost entirely with "green screen" technology.

The technique puts the actors in front of a blank background saying their lines, and a computer will be used later to fill in the rest of the scenery and parts of the action.

It's a technique that was used with great success in movies like "300," "Sin City" and "Beowulf."

Green screen had been too expensive for a weekly TV series.

But the computer technology, in the last few months, has become better and cheap enough for a TV network to consider using to make an entire, 13-week series.

The new show will be produced by "Stargate" bosses Damian Kindler and Martin Wood, who already have a relationship with Sci Fi.

"Sanctuary" is described as the "X-Files" meets "Van Helsing." It follows the adventures of Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), a 157-year-old physician who studies monsters. She is helped in her work by her reluctant protégé, psychiatrist Will Zimmerman, and her fearless daughter Ashley. Together they seek to find and help the strange and often-frightening creatures that populate their world.

                            Tapping leaves Atlantis for Sanctuary!

Mike over at SyFy Portal floored me with this one. Amanda Tapping late of SG-1, with one season of Stargate Atlantis tucked away...is moving on. WTF?! The reports have it as "nothing personal" but I would suggest that might be a point of reference.

                            **snippage**

Sanctuary for those of you that might be living in caves....centers around Dr. Helen Magnus, an immortal protector of aliens in a series that began as a computer-generated world first found on the Internet. SciFi Channel, impressed with the work, greenlighted a series pickup and gave the show a 13-episode commitment as a fall series. The series will be the first television show to use completely virtual sets thanks to green- screen technologies.

On the job: Production has started on Sci Fi Channel's new original series
"Sanctuary." Shot in the style of the feature films "300" and "Sin City,"
"Sanctuary" is the first television series to feature live-action actors against
                              primarily virtual sets.

The 13-episode season of this one-hour drama is slated to debut this fall.

There are creatures that live among us, abnormal offshoots of evolution that
live in the fringes, unseen by most. Some are dangerous, but most are benign,
becoming violent only because they are threatened by an ever-encroaching
world. Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) has dedicated her life to tracking
                              these
                              mysterious creatures.

                                Sanctuary premiers on ITV4
                                9 April 2008

ITV4 has announced that they have acquired the UK premiere of
SANCTUARY, a new sci-fi series from the creators of Stargate: SG-1 and
Stargate: Atlantis. The 13-part series is based on the world's first
high-definition science-fiction Web series and will be the first
television series to use live-action actors against mostly virtual sets.

In the one-hour drama, Stargate: SG-1 star Amanda Tapping stars as Dr.
Helen Magnus, a 157-year old physician who studies monsters. She is
aided in her work by her reluctant protégé, psychiatrist Will Zimmerman
(Robin Dunne, Species 3, Dawson's Creek), and her fearless daughter
Ashley (Emilie Ullerup, Battlestar Gallactica). Together they seek to
find and help the strange and often frightening creatures that populate
                                their world.
