Well, technically... everyone died in the end.

That is true. It is how you live that counts.

And if you have lived 'right', then when you die there will be no island, no need to prove yourself, you get a one way ticket to the 'reward'

there will be no island? The island was real from the very beginning, and them being on it were Actual Events in The Real World.

I think she's referring to the sideways timeline island or existence - but maybe not. But either way it's not quite correct because the sideways wasn't there for them to figure things out- it was a place for them all to meet when they were ready to "let go." Jacob brought them to the island because they had baggage in real life, and he hoped that fixing themselves on the island would make one of them realize they have the potential to be the next guardian.

                    it's a metaphore.

there were people on that plane that just moved on to wherever they go. they had no baggage. They had no issues to deal with.

For some, Jacob couldn't have tagged them and kept them on the island. they had no reason to stay.

I think he could have only tagged those with baggage or reasons not to move on.

Jacob said that he picked them particularly because they were "lost" in their own lives, and needed each other to find themselves, to find their purpose or true self-worth.
Through those self-discoveries he would be able to have someone step up and realize they could and wanted to protect the island.
