Yah, but lets just face it, if Firefly was made last year or this year, i would think it would have stayed on the air with the ratings it had for the aired episodes on Friday, but we wouldn't have this movie thats comming that looks good (there was a trailer who recorded it at a con)

I think it's not entirely illogical to have a Western sort of setting. It's a sort of half-and-half for me at least.

Certainly the fact that many planets especially the ones far from the core are pretty primitive and basic seems reasonable, so to have a sort of c19 tech level and standard of living doesn't seem 'wrong'. But it just seems so... American. I'd love to see a more multiethnic sort of frontier world from time to time - planets where people wear mongol hats and live in yurts, or where they all wear saris and speak Hindi or something.

Firefly has a prostitute for a main character? Good grief, thanks for telling me, now I know not to see the show.

She's also the most fasinating character of the show. And the most high class. In the Firefly universe there is a profession known as "Companions", basicly they're prostitutes, EXCEPT they choose their clients from a long list of high class prospects. It's more like a escort service with sex as a perk. Don't judge a show based on one character, it's not like it glorifies the profession, just brings in the whole Western angle again.

She travels with the group because the ship gets around the galaxy to expained her client base. She's also in a Love/Hate relasionship with the captain.

...And the captain doesn't care how high class she is, he still looks down on her profession - just as she looks down on his . It's an interesting dynamic, although it's actually one of my least favourites simply cos all the other relationships are even more interesting and peppy.

Hehe. They do have an interesting relationship, something that we'll see a bit more of in the movie.

I agree, i like River's relationship with everyone else is quite interesting, especially with Book, with the whole Bible being wrong, although i can't say that shes wrong or right because i am a catholic and all, but i just thought the whole 'correcting the bible' was pretty funny.

I picked up the series on DVD just after it came out and was totally blown away with the story, characters and quality of the entire series. It's probably my favorite show overall. It's a shame that it was cancelled. Fortunently, it's being made into a movie, entitled Serenity, coming out April 22nd, 2005.

I'd just like to say that I've taken the plunge and bought me the series on DVD, despite never having seen an episode before. I've heard so many people saying how good it is, and that the majority of Buffy fans like it, so I decided I might as well give it a go. Pity I forgot my DVD player was broken, now I have to buy another!

I've been watching it on the Sci Fi channel, so I'm about halfway through it's run. Must say I'm very impressed with the show, and am looking forward to Serenity.

Speaking of unification, anybody else find it funny how many people paint the Alliance as bad guys?

They aren't, well not all of them. I liked it how the captain's willingness to answer the distress call that allowed them to escape in the pilot.

Just finished watching the first two episodes on my dodgy PS2, and I have to say I'm impressed. The visuals are amazing for a TV series, and the acting isn't too hammed-up, as I was expecting it to be. It'll be hard not to watch all the episodes in one go - I want to watch one a week as if I was watching it on TV.
