In urban schools, it is more likely to be parents who don't give a frack. I used to be able to send homework home with students and get it done the next period. Now, if it isn't done in class...it won't get done. Why? Because parents don't make their children do homework, and I know what it is like to make a kid do homework. I have to battle with mine nightly...but I'm much more stubborn than he is...so...I win that battle.
You and I have been down this road.

Remember me mentioning the GIGO law? A great many of the parents of what urban districts are being asked to teach shouldn't even HAVE kids. That's no secret.

And of the two major political schools of thought in this country, which is more to blame for that mess?

I feel the issue started with King George (the former worst President) started No Child Left Behind. It is good in theory, but it is another example of the government saying "here do this...but we're not giving you any financial assistance to accomplish it."

Again and again, the feds need to stop sticking their noses in. Why is that so hard to understand?

Oh, wait a minute. I get it. They want the federal dollars without the federal control. It doesn't work that way.

I don't have a problem with the government butting out. However, if the government is going to mandate new guidelines, funding should be provided.

Why is it surprising that Trump would want someone who is not on the same page in his administration?

Gary Cohn advocated "establishment" free trade policies, which are great at benefiting the well off and wealthy, who make their money in the wall street casinos and the multinational corporate interests. [edit] But no so great for the working class, whose jobs are devalued and often outright vanish.
Hell, even some of the Democrats agree with Trump on this one. (bolding mine)

              http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/3...aid-of-tariffs

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said in an interview broadcast Sunday that she isn’t afraid of tariffs, saying they are one part of trade policy.

“I am not afraid of tariffs. I think tariffs are one part of that trade policy. It's not the only part. There are other parts of trade policy,” Warren told NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“I want to see a trade policy that puts American workers first, puts American small businesses first, puts American consumers first.”

President Trump last week enacted 25 percent tariffs on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum despite objections from Republican lawmakers.

"Today, I am defending America’s national security by placing tariffs on foreign imports of steel and aluminum," Trump said Thursday.

Warren during the interview with NBC host Chuck Todd noted she has long been critical of U.S. trade policy.

“I think that our trade deals have been negotiated for a very, very long time now to benefit large, multinational corporations, not to benefit American workers,” she said.

“Not to benefit America's small businesses, and often not even to benefit American consumers.”
Is it surprising that Cohn would want out, or that Trump would want him out?

This is one of the attributes that won Trump the White House; the willingness to oppose the "establishment" in his own party when it doesn't act for the interests of the US working stiff and the American people.

Does it surprise you that I agree with a progressive / liberal type? They are right on some things, and I have no problem saying so when they are. Trade policy has been written to benefit the big money crowd to the detriment of the lower classes for a very long time now, by politicians of both parties who have been bought and paid for by big money interests.

Obama's "race to the top" was no better.

Protectionism has always been a liberal standing point. That's why the GOP was protectionist back when it was the liberal party. It survived the ideological flip. The DNC now has two camps.
The pro-trade and the anti-trade. They usually try not to pit the two against each other and that's why you don't hear much from them. Reagan disappointed a few republican voters for this reason. Him being pro-immigration and free trade. Or they simply ignored this part of his plank.
