Wasn't trying to "change the rules." I made the images much smaller than the originals so the kb should've been small enough.

Doesn't matter cuz I've deleted the post.

Lovely arties everyone! Greened where I could.

If you're using PS, I recommend fiddling with the settings of Save for Web. The PSD file for my most complicated piece so far (about 30 layers) was well over 4 MB, but the end result is about 74 kb, without a noticeable drop in quality.

And no matter what your graphics software says, it's what your picture storage provider says that counts. PB is notorious for making files bigger for some odd reason.

                      Can someone help me out??

I've been making wallies and sigs the same sizes that I used to. But for some reason GW has been saying that they're too big, file-wise.. Is it because I have "so many" layers or what??

Seems like we've all been having that problem lately.

                          Have you "flattened" your layers?

In PS, you do this in the Layers menu. Then use "Save for Web" rather than "Save As."

In Gimp, I believe the option is "Merge Visible." Unfortunately it's been so long since I opened Gimp that I can't remember the menu.

Sometimes I merge them but sometimes I can't because then it changes the effect.. But, yeah, I get what you're saying

When saving the file it matters what 'quality' (how much image compression), which image processing program and what file format you use.

                                Take for example this image:

It came to me as a 4200x2800 pixel jpg image with a file size of 2866KB.

Resaving the image as a jpg with no modifications save image compression or quality (75percent) I get the following file sizes:
                                - Using Photoshop CS5.5 717KB
                                - Using GIMP 2.8 581KB
                                - Using IrfanView 4.33 454KB
                                - Using Paint.NET 3.5.11 487KB

When saving as a png, again the only variable is the image compression (7 out of 9) setting I get:
                                - using Photoshop CS5.5 5512KB
                                - using GIMP 2.8 5816KB
                                - using IrfanView 4.33 5813KB
                                - using Paint.NET 3.5.11 8074 KB (had no setting for file compression)

So for the purpose of posting on GateWorld jpg is better than png as you can get smaller file size in most cases.

Also, it has been my experience with Photobucket (I use the free version) that large images are resized to a maximum of 1024 pixels wide. Again PB uses their own compression settings which sometimes results in a bigger file size.
