I remember one time at Paddington Station waiting in line for a ticket behind a lady from Canada. The ticket man asked her if she was American - you never saw someone so offended in your life!

The only true equivalent I can think of is calling a Scotsman an Englishman. Being an Englishman isn't a bad thing, it's just that we don't like being mistaken for each other because of the history involved.

Well, Paddington is in London, so she had as much right to be there as me. But it *was* amusing in a strange, demented sort of way.

Actually, I was more or less stating a fact. Canadians, on the whole, tend to not like Americans. I once read in an editorial something to the effect of: If America was to ban nuclear proliferation one day, Canada would drop all treaties before, and put out nukes like Russia in the Cold.
