Penn State hit with $60 million fine

The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced a $60 million fine against Penn State University on Monday and banned its football team from the postseason for four years.

The school will also forfeit all football wins from 1998, NCAA President Mark Emmert said. That decision strips the late Joe Paterno of the title of winningest coach in major football college history.

While the school's football program will not face the so-called "death penalty" that would have prevented the team from playing in the fall, the school might have preferred a one-year suspension because of the severity of the scholarship losses, a four-year postseason sanctions and other penalties, a source familiar with the case told CNN on Sunday.

The punishment is part of the continued fallout from the child sex abuse scandal involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, who was convicted in late June of 45 of the 48 counts he faced involving 10 young victims.

The NCAA's punishments follow an independent investigation led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, whose report held four top Penn State officials, including late football coach Joe Paterno, responsible for failing to stop the abuse.

Emmert wrote a letter to Penn State President Rodney Erickson in November that included four questions he wanted the university to answer.

The NCAA felt the questions were answered by the Freeh report and therefore it could act before the university responded, a source familiar with the case said.

On Sunday, in State College, Pennsylvania, the 900-pound bronze statue of Paterno was removed from its place outside the 106,000-seat football stadium. Erickson said in a statement the statue is being stored in a "secure location."

The statue was removed exactly six months after Paterno died of lung cancer. He died less than three months after he coached his last game, an October 29 victory over Illinois that gave him a major college record 409 wins, 111 of which came after 1998. Under Paterno's 46-season tenure as head coach, the Nittany Lions won two national championships, went undefeated five times, and finished in the top 25 national rankings 35 times.

I can understand the fines and the no college scholarships thing....but I think actually overturning all those seasons of victories which were hard fought despite Sandusky's crimes is going a bit too far....the team fought hard to get those victories and here comes the NCAA punishing people in the team who had no connection to the crime whatsoever....I think the NCAA just enjoys adding insult to injury

Paterno and other university authorities actively concealed child rape over a span of decades. These people deserve to be rotting in prison, not getting a slap on the wrist regarding their sporting record.

Yes, I agree with you (amazing, I know). Punish Sandusky, punish Paterno, punish the university president and anyone else who covered this up. Don't punish the students who had nothing to do with this.

How about if the twit didn't have access to fully automatic weapons, chances are there would not have been such a high death/casualty toll?
Where is the logical reason in private citizens owning automatic weapons?
Also, where were all the people pulling out thier own concealed weapons and stopping this dude, I guess if they all had weapons they could have defended themselves, that IS the argument for having them isn't it?

maybe how about a simple gun that allows a citizen to have a chance to neutralize the aggressor before the aggressor neutralizes him (and others?)

news sources are still a little shaky on whether he was wearing full riot gear or not...if he wasn't and all he was wering was a vest then his head and legs would still be ripe for target practice, but even in full riot gear bullets will eventually penetrate

and it's not like the exercise of our second amendment rights is totally unregulated....our right to drive is not totally unregulated either....we have the right to drive but you must first demonstrate that you've had proper training, which is why we must obtain a driver's license (of various classes, mine is a class D, suitable for regular cars,vans, stuff like that, then there's the various commercial license classes which are for those who plan to drive vehicles designed for shipping large loads of stuff or buses)

neither is our right to keep and bear arms unregulated...if a law-abiding citizen wishes to exercise his 2nd amendment right he must first obtain the proper kind of permit and before he can get the permit must prove that he is proficient in the use of a weapon of the class that permit belongs to....for example one kind of permit is concealed carry

In order to obtain a concealed carry permit one must receive the appropriate training and prove proficiency in a type of weapon that that permit is good for (and I highly doubt military grade weapons like Desert Eagles that have powerful recoil and can crack engine blocks qualify under the CCW permit)

but if I were to ever find myself in that kind of situation I might choose a gun from that permit class that's capable of firing both AP bullets and conventional ones. I wouldn't have them loaded by default but I'd make sure I chose a model where I could quickly swap out conventional bullets for the AP ones. Or another option would be to become proficient in the crossbow and fire an arrow at the guy whose tip is pure titanium...that would probably pierce his armor though lugging around something the size of a crossbow would be quite the endeavor

So the implication that armed citizens, who aren't the untrained bumpkins you'd like to make them out to be, would just be firing blindly into the fray in hopes they hit the guy is ridiculous. In most scenarios armed citizenry actually help to neutralize the threat much more quickly instead of just simply sitting idly by and letting him inflict more damage while they wait for the police

I agree that if anyone wants to have a firearm, they need to have a permit, and that permit must ensure that they are at least proficient with it.

I think that there should be certain firearms that are banned, though.
