Did no one even bother to watch the Charlie Chaplin speech? I thought it was truly great, and worth hearing. I'm a little surprised no one has any comments about it.
The success or failure of your deeds, does not add up to the sum of your life. Your spirit cannot be weighed! Judge yourself by the intentions of your actions, and by the strength with which you faced the challenges that have stood in your way. The Universe is so vast, and we are so small, there is only truly one thing we can control; whether we are good or evil... -Oma Desala

I'm not surprised by this. The Muslim Brotherhood has long sought Sharia Law to be the law of the land. Their long term goal is a united Muslim world, all under Sharia Law. Jest because you have a democratic process, doesn't mean you'll get good results. Just ask the lamb that had to take a vote along with two wolves, about what to have for dinner. Unless the lamb is well armed, it won't go well. Armed with either weapons, or a Constitution to protect minority rights.

Ben forgot to specify the weapon. if the sheep has a gun then balance is still upset :/

anyway - this is only a decision by a government the people voted for
question is what would've been the result had the matter been subject to a direct vote

I'm not aware of their being a 'Christian Brotherhood' of official note. The Muslim Brotherhood has been an official group since around 1920. Since their beginning, their stated goal has been the institution of Sharia Law as the official governing law of Egypt, and the entire Muslim world. This isn't supposition, this is just history.

As to 'minority', that can be ANY group that is outnumbered in any sense. It doesn't have to be a matter of race, it can also be a matter of ideology.

What do you say to those who say American law is based on Christianity?
What do you call those who want a countries laws to be only based on Judao-Christian beliefs and moral structures?
Just because you don't "officially name" your "group" does NOT mean that such a group or mindset exists.

There is a certain amount of truth to that, but it isn't SOLELY based on Christianity. As I understand it, there is a copy of the Ten Commandments in the Supreme Courts' work place. The American laws were based on a combination of sources, some Christian based, but not all. There was Saxon Common Law, which is virtually identical to what Jethro advised Moses in how to govern the children of Israel. There was also the ideas of Cicero, about Natural Law. The Founding Fathers felt that Christianity was an indispensable pillar of Liberty, because they felt that faith in a higher power and law, would make for upstanding citizens that would follow the law for reasons other than fear of punishment.

It depends on which sect your referring to. Christianity is a very wide umbrella of beliefs, from the fairly liberal, to the very conservative. Interestingly, Bill O'Reilly has been making the argument that Christianity is NOT a Religion, but rather a philosophy, and I see his point, to a degree. The Lutheran, Baptist, Pentecostal, or Catholic churches ARE Religious organizations promoting specific brands of religion, but they all follow the 'Philosophy' of Christianity. The same argument is made about Buddhism, which itself was never meant to be a religion, according to Buddha himself. Yes, there are people who practice Buddhism as a religion, but it doesn't have to be practiced that way. There ARE Buddhist Christians, so I suppose you could conceivably have Christian Buddhist.

I suppose it comes down to the question, does belief in a deity in and of itself make a Religion? I would argue, NO, it doesn't. A Religion requires a certain codification of beliefs, which specific church groups DO have, but Christianity as a whole does not. I think the difference between the two, is that in one you have a 'Religious' Faith (such as Catholics or Pentecostals), and in the other you have a 'Spiritual' Faith (non-organizational). While it is true that Christianity, as a religion or otherwise, is based on spiritual literature, the literature in and of itself is hardly a religion, since there is very little consensus on it.

This feels like it should be in the Religion Discussion thread...

True, but it is hard to make any real progress in pushing said mindsets without an 'official' group.

Sorry doesen't work. Christians in this country do not (generally) want to behead you. That is in their bible. They believe. The Muslim Brotherhood believes their holy scripture commands them to enslave the entire world and kill anyone who stands in their way.
