I plan on auditioning for one of the US military bands as soon as there's an opening for euphonium. Though judging from the size of the Armed Forces Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble (80 players!), there won't be one anywhere in the world for a while...

Those RN chaps are a versatile bunch, once knew a AB who had 4 or 5 primary roles.

ooooh exciting. When do you go? (where do they do the basic training these days?)

oh and can we get rid of the notion of cannon fodder... it doesn't exactly help recruitment

Then how do you explain Marines without proper body armor or sufficiently armored vehicles?

I'd like to but, I have flat feet and horrible eyesight. The only redeeming quality I possess is that I have decent marksmanship (as long as I use my left eye that is).

I never used the words cannon fodder. I was merely questioning your rationale, "they spend so much on training Marines that they're not viewed as easily expendable (not exact quote)." Well I brought up the point, if they spend so much on Marines then why didn't they invest in body armor, or armor plating for hum-vees...just two examples.

The anwser is NOT that the military doesn't have enough money. It's the best funded military in the history of the Earth. In addition, defense spending just got another raise, not to mention all of the homeland security money that didn't go to anything useful. They choose to spend their money on other things besides Marines; technological advancements, research, etc...
