((Where's your god now? I'm posting!))

Vanguard felt he’d missed an opportunity. He was sure she’d been on the cusp of an admission that could have changed his fortunes.

                      ‘No. I don’t.’

‘But I’ve just made a pot and everything-‘ Jenni brought the tray up to indicate her task but Vanguard was lost in his own head, chasing a thought.

And then he laughed. ‘Is it that simple?’

                      ‘Is what simple?’ She asked.

He stood and plucked the tray from her unresisting hands with a devious smile. ‘I think I’ll take it to her. Poor dear looks as though she could use something.’

‘Yeah…’ Jenni murmured with a slight frown on her features. She watched him in suspicion as he walked out of the control room, whistling.

If she had been in a later time-frame, Jennifer might have become alarmed at his choice of tune, however she’d never heard of the Imperial March or Star Wars.

‘Knock, knock.’ Vaan said idly as he leaned against the door. There was no answer. ‘I’ve brought tea.’ He heard the swift footsteps she took to reach the door.

Her head cautiously peeked out; she seemed surprised to find he really did have a tray of tea. With a side order of biscuits.

                      ‘What do you want?’

‘I want to talk. I have a peace offering.’ He indicated the tray.

‘Hmm. Fine.’ She threw open the door and stepped back.

The room had been tidied. Boxes shoved further back, torn photographs and tissues had been spirited into a bin. It looked like it was going to implode. Hell, she even made her bed.

‘What do you want to talk about?’ She muttered.

‘A truce. We have mutual interests.’ He laid the tray on the bed and picked up the scalding teapot. The boiling liquid splashed into two cups and he effortlessly added spoonfuls of sugar and a good splash of milk to them.

‘Mutual interests huh?’ Susie sounded sceptical.

‘Oh yes. CJ.’ The very mention of her name darkened Susie’s features.

‘Are you taunting me?’ She hissed.

‘No. You want her dead, I want her dead. You seem to think I’m some sort of monster, Susie but I’m not.’ He blew the steam from her cup, eyes boring holes into her as she searched for the barest hint of a lie. Evidently, she found none.

‘Why do you want me to co-operate?’

‘Are you saying you won’t?’ He replied.

‘I’m saying, I want to know why.’

‘I want a happy camp, first and foremost. Secondly, there’s a better chance of us finding them and putting an end to this with your assistance.’

‘Is there a last one?’ She wondered.

‘Revenge. She did overstep her mark.’ Vangaurd reminded her. ‘And I can be flexible in manner of punishment.’

A snort escaped Susie’s lips. ‘You want me to play along and help you fix your little universe, huh?’

‘And you get CJ.’ He agreed.

‘You know, I wasn’t there for very long but I get the impression that CJ was the one leading that sh*tshow.’ For a few seconds, she looked pensive and drawn.

‘And then I broke every limb in her ******* body. With a cricket bat.’ The chuckles started slowly but grew the longer she laughed. ‘Sure Vanguard. I’ll help.’

‘It’s a deal.’ He laughed along with her.

Everything was in a panic. CJ could feel her head spinning. She blinked heavily, where was she? What was going on? Why did everything hurt so much? She could remember nearly nothing, yet everything felt very much familiar...but slightly off. CJ tried to speak but her throat was sore and bruised. She wanted to ask what was going on, everyone rushing about. She gazed to her side and spied a girl.

'Ellen or something? Right? Elle! That is it...isn't it?'

CJ moaned, her head was aching very badly.

"CJ?" Elle said in surprise, pulling herself closer to CJ. CJ blinked at the familiar face.

"Eh...." CJ attempted the name but the pain was too great. She whimpered.

Elle felt a sudden and strange concern. She wasn't a big fan of CJ, but seeing her weakened and confused was even more concerning than the distrust she felt towards CJ.

"You're awake..." Vagabond said weakly, turning to face CJ. They locked eyes and the Vagabond could tell that something in them was not quite right. It was an unfamiliarity that he knew from before they had grown close. CJ had described that he had once been a friend, the husband of her adopted sister. How that unfamiliarity had been between them, close but not in the sense they had become accompanied to.

"P..." CJ tried again, wanting to acknowledge who she knew as P-90.

He rushed to her side, kneeling before her, "Don't talk Ceej, you were badly injured...."

CJ gave him a look, as if to suggest that she could deduct that much, even if she didn't know exactly why. She just remembered that someone had beaten her badly, not who it had been or why. She closed her eyes sleepily.

He placed a hand on her face, as if to comfort her. She leaned into it, still dazed.

"Mmmm..." She sighed, smiling as much as she could without making her bruised face ache.

"She need to get to the med bay..." Elle whispered, "You can have your teary snot fest after she's been looked over."

Vagabond stared at CJ a little longer, despite Elle's statement he knew to be sure. He had waited what felt like days to see her conscious again. She was badly beaten, and it would take ages for her to heal properly. She had special powers, and would heal quicker than most, but the damage was extensive, especially to her head and neck. She was lucky to be alive, no human would have lasted as long as she had in that state, not without immediate attention.

Elle stood, "She needs to be attended to. You know that... the longer you stare into her eyes like a love sick puppy the longer it will take for her to recover..."

It was strange that in this moment Elle realised that she was no longer the dog. Vagabond's authority crumbled the moment that he saw CJ on the floor. No, long before that.... when he and CJ had first started feeling weak and lonely and looked to each other for an end to their biting and painful loneliness. Someone had to take charge until CJ healed well enough, and Vagabond was in no state to make decisions, the last one he made more than likely killed a confused girl.

"Its an order!" Elle growled, "If we want an effective leader then she needs to be taken care of!"

Vagabond could tell what she was implying. He knew following her order would undermine his authority but he also knew that CJ did need help. He sighed and picked CJ up, pained by her cries as her broken body burned from the movement.

"It'll be alright CJ, we'll take care of you," He said in a soothing voice, "I won't let anyone hurt you ever again, I've taken care of it..."

CJ's head lulled back in his arms, finally passing out from the pain. He sprinted to the med bay, ignoring Foley's pained screams as Wolf attended to his leg.

"She's patched up better than I could do," Wolf stated as Vagabond placed her on the bed next to Foley, "I can take care of the boy.... she needs something to take the edge off..."

Vagabond nodded, rooting threw drawers for a pain killer. "Aha!" He pulled out a syringe and carefully injected it into CJ's broken arm. He could tell she was already healing through her spiritual pressure, the pain killer would ensure that the process went smoother, and she would no longer write in agony. He collapsed into a chair once he was done, "She'll be fine.." He reassured.

"The worst is over for her," Wolf said instinctually as he injected Foley with a cocktail of pain killers and sleeping medication, "She's a soul reaper after all." He wondered where that had come from, he had no idea that she was a soul reaper, let alone what that implicated as far as healing went.

Vagabond nodded, Elle stood in the door of the med bay, her eyes darkened by the scene. Hours earlier things had been simple and looking up, now the leader was a puddle of broken limbs and the second in command was a puddle of emotion. She shook her head, and turned to Tood.

"Keep an eye on them," She whispered, "make sure Vagabond doesn't make any rash decisions."

Tood nodded, taking a seat outside the door, "Yes ma'am!"

Vagabond gripped CJ's hand, rubbing the back of it with his thumb while leaning on the other.

CJ moaned in her sleep. He leaned, "I promise no one will place a hand on you ever again." He placed his lips on hers before pulling back and looking at her with sadness.

That darkness again. She could feel her area of light had shrunken. The darkness inside her was getting closer to swallowing whole.

                        "You've been hurt very badly."

CJ spun in the light, seeing nothing around her in the darkness. "Who is there."

She knew that voice, but in the darkness it was disembodied. She was terrified.

"You know who I am..." He whispered, into her ear.

She spun around, her heart skipping a beat, "Mapp?"

He grinned at her, "You got hurt very hard on your head...Ceej."

"Thanks for the obvious deduction, Sherlock.." CJ snarked.

"There is the Ceej I know, no nonsense." He quipped.

CJ could feel her hand being held, even though Mapp was at the edge of the light.

"The question is..." CJ stated, "Is who..."

Mapp laughed, "That would spoil the ending..."

CJ stared him down, "I need to know!"

"You won't like what you hear.." He warned, stepping closer to her.

"I don't care..." She hissed, "I need to know who did this... I need to figure out why everything feels off."

Mapp shook his head, "You don't need to know any of that yet, you'll get filled in when you wake up. All you need to know is I promise no one will ever place a hand on you again."

He moved in, pulling her in for a deep kiss. CJ closed her eyes and took it in. He pulled away, and ran a hand through her hair.

"Mapp..." She whispered, "Mapp...oh...Mapp...I never want to wake up."

"M..." CJ moaned, her tone that of pleasure instead of pain. Vagabond leaned in closer to hear what she was trying to say.

                        "Mmmm" She whispered again, "oh..."

He ran a hand through her hair, hoping to soothe her.

"Mapp." She sighed happily in her sleep.

Vagabond pulled back, his heart suddenly burning. He grit his teeth as he felt the jealousy and betrayal course through his veins. She really did love him still, he would never be enough for her, not as long as Mapp was a possible future for her. He wanted to get up and leave, but deep inside he knew he couldn't do that, not when she mattered so much to him.

                        "I..." CJ whispered sadly, "n...."

He looked away from her. He would not let this change his mind about her, she had suffered ages of unreciprocated love...then he could do it to.

CJ blinked away, looking confused. She turned her head to the side, facing the Vagabond, "P...P-90..."

He smiled weakly, trying to hide the hurt in his eyes, "Good, you've woken up."

"W...what happened...Where is Mapp?" She coughed the her throat burning in pain from talking.

He felt a light switch on, she was confused about everything, the blunt trauma to her head must have jumbled everything. Despite her wondering where Mapp was, he knew it wasn't so much that she still wanted Mapp, but that she couldn't remember that she loved him now.

"Its Vagabond now.." he whispered, "You got knocked on the head..."

CJ squeezed her eyes shut, "by who?"

                        "Susie.." He muttered.

"She's dead..." CJ whispered, "stop lying to me...who really did this?"

"You know its true.." Vagabond stated, "I know you remember what happened. The timeline was reset.... Susie hasn't died yet..."

CJ felt the memories of Susie come rushing back to her. The cricket bat, the repeated blows. Everything that had happened up to that point.

"Why?" CJ cried, her tears stinging the cuts on her face.

                        "You know why," He whispered.

Her eyes grew wide, recalling gentle embraces, locking lips, all with Vagabond.

"She found out..." She whimpered, "What have I done?"

He grasped her hand, "You've done nothing..."

"Where is she?" She asked, "I need to explain....that its not what she thinks.."

"You tried that and ended up like this," He warned.

"I need to tell her," She mumbled turning away from him, "It didn't mean..." She stopped herself. 'It didn't mean anything...right? No..it did mean something...'

He soothed her, running his hand through her hair again, "I took care of her..."

CJ's head snapped back to him, the pain from the movement causing her to cry out. He leaned over her, holding her face, kissing her fore head.

                        "Stop," She cried, "Please.."

He pulled back, looking at her scrunched up face, as if the pain was so much more than physical.

"What did you do!" She hissed, "to my sister."

"He put her out on a desolate world to die," Tood chimed in, "Elle thought you ought to know.."

CJ glared up at Vagabond, "How could you do that!"

He felt a twinge in his chest, he had done that to keep CJ safe, he had done it for her, hadn't he? No...he did it because he was insane with anger. Vaan was right, he was the same man.

"Go away.." CJ cried, angriliy, "Go.."

Vangaurd stood, unsure of what was happening.

"Please..." CJ sobbed, "This hurts so much more with you here..."

                        He stumbled back, "Ceej."

"GO!" She screamed, "Leave me be.."

"But..." He muttered in confusion, "I love you."

CJ turned away from him, her heart aching, being torn apart by opposing forces, "I know..." She choked out.

Vagabond nodded, turning around to storm out of the room. Wolfax looked between the weeping CJ and the door where Tood sat, the sound of Vagabond storming down the hall echoing through the room.

"Do you think they're upset..or is it just me?" Tood asked.
                        ------

Vaan smiled at Susie, "It will be so much easier to destroy her and her little alliance then you think..."

(That is right guys, we be back...Also I think it is P-90 or Dray's turn.. but if Sus wants to go... she can... also sorry for the fail.)
