Is it called Football in the UK? Yes. Its formal name is association football, as opposed to rugby football. I think the term soccer comes from shortening the name 'association', the same way we sometimes shorten rugby to 'rugger'. (informally)
The world body is called FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), and the governing body here is the Scottish Football Association.

the reason that Americans call it soccer is to distinguish it from American Football - it is still not as popular in this country as American football.sigpic
