My mother smoked too - from a teenager until she was pregnant with my youngest sister (she stopped during her pregnancies with the rest of us, too). She hasn't smoked in 40+ years, but I know that whenever she has respiratory problems, the question of her years of smoking is raised as a contributing factor. I know she regrets smoking now, but as she's said, no one knew any better then and she thought it was 'cool'...(she's 80 years old now - she doesn't smoke, but she's still VERY cool! )
Feel a need to add my two cents.
My mom is 87 and smoked for quite a bit of those years (we nagged her into quitting). She now suffers from Macular Degeneration, which is quite common with the elderly (Don't let my mom know I used that term if you value my life).
The first question the specialist asked her was if she smoked and for how many years!

Oh yes, mine does too. That's much worse than any respiratory problems she has ever had. She's really debilitated by her poor eyesight now.

Hey! I only had two Dr. Peppers.....but it's still early yet!!!!!

I had a very dear, sweet elderly lady friend....she was the most incredible human being I have ever encountered.....do you hear another story coming???? She had Macular Degenertion as well and it was so hard for her. One of my daughters had to do a senior community project a few years ago and she got special permission from her school to spend her time with our friend. Normally the projects have to be with special programs already in place, not a specific person. She used to read to our friend....it was such a blessing for them both. She taught me a lot about aging with dignity....now if I can only remember it!!!!

One thing I have learned from getting older....if we live long enough we'll get EVERYTHING!!!!!

What I hate is restaurants with non-smoking sections that are only devided from the smoking sections by an invisible line. I'd rather wait longer than accept a table that close to the smoking section. I used to work in an area with lots of smokers, to the point I had to leave the clouded room for awhile. Now, I literally can't catch my breath around cigarette smoke. Walked into the casino of a cruise ship one time and thought I would suffocate before I got out.

I try hard to be considerate around non-smokers! I would never think of lighting up in the home of non-smokers... Even with their permission! I always go outside! I even go outside to smoke in my own home with there are visitors that don't smoke.

I don't like secondhand smoke either... I know that sounds strange but smoking a cig is totally different from sitting there having someone else's smoke getting in my face. When eating out with non-smokers, I ask for non-smoking. Mostly, I smoke in my house and my car... At work, of course, I go outside... And yes, Mala, I was one of those people standing outside the office in 40 below wind chill in NYC!! Fortunately, Arkansas winter is a little milder than that!

Oh, and Girls Night Out... That's smoking territory! LOL!

Which leads me to my next, and final, step on my soapbox. I feel very strongly that each of us has that one thing or things that help us calm down and/or cope with a stressful time. It may only be a minute of stress but it can also be a lifetime. I feel that I have an addictive personality and I am so grateful that I was able to stay away from smoking, alcohol and drugs. I know that if any of those things had been my drug of choice...I would have been doomed. I understand that you can't just stop because an addiction goes beyond the physical part to the emotional part. My drug of choice is food...I love to eat and I eat at any time for any reason. I am a Lifetime Member of WeightWatchers and I struggle with my weight every single day of my life. So I know that it's not as easy as some think to "just stop" smoking/eating/drinking.

I hope you enjoyed my little "me" story....Tame, smoker or not, I do know that you are one person I am proud to call friend and I wouldn't hesitate for one second to meet you.....just not at a bar!!!!
Critter I agree. We all have our little coping mechanisms. I've struggled with my weight my whole life as well. I recently decided that I need to make a lifestyle change for the sake of my health and my family's health. Hubs is also overweight, thankfully our children are not and we want to keep it that way.

My rant was not meant to disparage anyone's lifestyle or life choices. It's my opinion only and I hope MeiMei, Tame and others who smoke took it that way. I've enjoyed getting to know alot of people on GW and whether they smoke or not does not impact my perceptions, just as I hope my being overweight does not offend anyone else. It's who we are on the inside that is the most important.

To give you an idea of what my mother is like, this is something she sent me in an email... I think this might be US, in a few years! :

A group of seniors were sitting around talking about all their ailments.

"My arms have gotten so weak I can hardly lift this cup of coffee," said one.

"Yes, I know," said another. "My cataracts are so bad; I can't even see my coffee."

"I couldn't even mark an "X" at election time, my hands are so crippled," volunteered a third.

"What? Speak up! What? I can't hear you!"

"I can't turn my head because of the arthritis in my neck," said a fourth, to which several nodded weakly in agreement.

"My blood pressure pills make me so dizzy!" exclaimed another.

"I forget where I am, and where I'm going," said another. "I guess that's the price we pay for getting old," winced an old man as he slowly shook his head.

                  The others nodded in agreement.

"Well, count your Blessings," said a woman cheerfully "and thank God we can all still drive."
