A year ago they weren't actively seeking it but since Brokeback Mountain, everyone's looking. It might die down in a little while. But I'm proving to myself that I can write just about anything. Which, for a writer, is a good thing.

Whether publishers want mine is another question that has yet to be answered!

Of course, that's not the only thing I'm writing. I have several manuscripts in various stages of completion from mainstream romance to more exotic stuff. Someday...
Can you write a grant proposal?

One thing I've learned is to write fast. I must get back into creative writing (not that writing proposals isn't creative ). Writing romance would be difficult for me, but it might be freeing too. I usually write suspense.

Aw but romantic suspense is a big seller these days! My friend, Elle James, writes for Harlequin Intrigue. One out in March, two coming later this year and now three for 2007. They seem to want them as fast as she can crank them out.

Are you trying to recruit me? I do need a retirement fund.

Can you still write them with pirates? I like pirates. Hey, has anyone written a gay pirate romance yet? Now THAT would be fun. I could use Elizabethan language and euphemisms like "My sword" and "sailing around the horn".

Um, that would be a yes. I know of one you can find at ellorascave.com. Although somewhere along the line a woman gets involved. Or at least that's what my, um, friend told me. I, personally, have no idea about such things.

*cackle* Hey, why should I be alone in my addiction!

And as far as pirates, the only one I saw that was "alternate lifestyle" involved a Pirate Queen! *cackle*

The hell with the retirement fund. I just wish I could get published and make enough money to quit the dratted day job! But that's a daydream. Most authors I know supplement the DDJ. Few are successful enough to make a real living at it. And I know a few who publish regularly and still don't make enough.

But it's fun and a creative outlet. If I make money at it, all the better!

That's why I said retirement fund. I wouldn't expect it to be regular. I work for a non-profit. I definitely need a retirement fund.

My only retirement fund is a 401k. They don't offer anything else at work. I worked for non-profit once but they were supplemented by the state of New York so we had state benefits. The pay sucked but the bennies were great.

Does anyone offer a retirement fund anymore?

Probably not many. And that really bites. Social security will probably be bankrupt by the time I'm old enough to retire and the 401k isn't growing that fast! I'll end up having to work until I drop.

Depressing isn't it? To paraphrase Scarlet. We'll think about it tomorrow.

Hmmm, I guess it's a good thing I'm teaching my kids they are my retirement fund. I took care of them their first twenty years, they can take care of me my last twenty.
