And after seeing some of Emmerich's recent movies, I actually shudder to think what he might do to a reboot. I think the dude peaked in the 90s. They should just let sleeping dogs lie, unless they intend to do the concept justice.

Over the years, having heard this rumor off and on, I have to say it sounds a little... I dunno, petulant? Indignant? Like Emmerich and/or Devlin are willing to disregard the popularity of the show by completely ignoring the canon, and therefore they must think fans of the series aren't really that important. I mean, by disregarding series canon, it's like they're saying "no, the plots of the show weren't part of the original concept, it's stupid. Here, this is how it was *really* to be."

Don't get me wrong, I don't want anything gratuitous. One of the reasons I love Serenity so much is because it honestly seemed to try to wrap things up. It had actual plot to impart, not just give the fans one more scene of Mal being Mal, or Jayne wearing his silly hat with Vera lifted over his shoulder. So if I get to watch a new Stargate film, I don't just want it to be a conglomeration of "space monkeys" and "Indeed" moments, just trying to feed us the highlights of the series.

If they can't give me something of quality, then I'm content to rewatch my DVDs again and again and again.

I for one am getting sick of the fact that there hasn't been an original movie out of Hollywood for years now

I know, right? They keep remaking the same things.

I watched an interview on TV with a female studio exec who after finding great success in getting movies made in the 1990s and early 2000s, found herself struggling to get projects greenlit. The movies she was responsible for were all relatively small personal stories with no explosions or gonzo special effects, but they did make respectable profits.

After some research, the answer she came up with is globalization. For decades, Hollywood has relied domestic US box office (both theatrical showings and home video markets) in order to gauge success. In order for a movie to be profitable, studio execs, buy as much TV, radio and print adverts as they can afford. This generates awareness in the movie consuming public as to the existence of a particular product. This can involve tens of millions of dollars in marketing costs, just for the US domestic market. Multiply that times the number of countries that show US movies and the marketing costs become prohibitive.

In order to get around this hurdle, studio execs are relying on the "pre-awareness" of the movie watching public. This means, a major movie star (like say George Clooney or Matt Damon) or an adaption of something else that is very popular (like the Harry Potter books or comic book superheroes) or are part of a preestablished movie franchise (like the Ice Age or Bourne movies).

Take Ice Age for example, each movie in the domestic US market are reliable performers generating around 250 to 350 million in box office receipts. In the worldwide market each Ice Age sequel has generated more sales than the previous ones, the last Ice Age sequel generated more than twice the box office totals internationally compared to the domestic US market.

The biggest growth area in world as far movie sales are concerned is China. They are building one movie theater a day in China and with over a billion potential movie goers studios are taking very little chances of their movies not being shown in China. The Chinese government only allows about 35 US movies a year to be exhibited. The exception is if the movie is presented in 3D or Imax format which are NOT counted in the yearly quota. This is also why there is a flood of 3D movies.

So with potentially a billion dollars involved for each movie, studio execs are taking very little chances with the formula.

Me too. My twitter feed is full of comments like "give us an SG-1/Atlantis movie, we don't want a reboot!" Lol. Good luck, Emmerich. I'm pretty sure the series' fandom will sink that ship before it's even been built.
Sam and Jack... Still the best romance on TV in years!

I think it's very interesting, how will they know which 35 movies China picks? Or are they playing it safe and make sure every movie is 'China friendly'?

and crappy remakes at that.....the effects might be better but I don't watch movies just for the effects....I far prefer the classic versions of most of my favorite movies, which at least had something resembling a good plotline to them

They make sure the movies are as you say 'China friendly'. There was a recent complaint that the monster movie Pacific Rim is some sort of anti-Chinese propaganda.

The 35 movie quota is recent development only in the last 2 or 3 years. Before that they only allowed 20 US movies a year.

So we're going to Minnesota in Nov. My sister will make sure we go to the Mall Of America while we're there.

My question is: any shops there I can geek out in?

Tried looking in the directory on the website and nothing is jumping out at me. But I have no idea what stores in the US are like these days (its been over 10 years since I've been there).

Found all my sporting and coffee needs. And an anime shop for my friend.

                              Anyone any ideas?
