My mom is scared, I know, but she never lets the little ones know this. She tries to stay strong for them, even though she can’t always be strong. I understand why. I had to be strong each time I’ve seen my mother be rolled out of the house on a stretcher, oxygen mask covering her face, making it so that we can’t even kiss her good-bye before she goes away. Each time, the terrible thought rolls through my mind — is this the last time I’ll ever see her? I have to be strong; I’m the oldest of four. It’s so hard to look at your seven year old sister’s tear-streaked face, to hear her ask, in a voice tight with fear and sorrow, “Is mom going to be okay?” when you know that she means “Is mom going to live?” It’s hard to answer her, when you don’t really know, but don’t want her to worry more.Spoiler:
