Spartacus is about gladiators (Rome was not. Showing a different part of Roman society, which was still full of sex and violence), and the gladiators short life was hard training, blood, death and brutality. They killed and died for the entertainment of others. What else do you expect a program about gladiators and their lives to depict? If you ignore all that stuff, it loses its realism. The only difference between now and the supposed "good old days when everything was rosy", is that the show runners are allowed to show more. Life 2000 years ago was harsh and unpleasant; now we live (have returned to) a point in time when we can finally show that reality.
If you dont like the style, fair enough, but the show is about violent people in a violent job in a violent time.
