Well, we know from 'The Ark of Truth' that the Alterans(what the Ancients called themselves at the time) are from the same planet as the Ori. They lived in an isolated mountain town, keeping their true level of technolagy a secret. Instead of fighting, or even using the ark, they decided to take off in their intergalactic ship and find a new home. I suspect the early history of humanity on their planet would have been similar to ours.

The way I see it there are two basic possibilities of how the Alterans would have got to that mountain:

    a) The Alteran were an ethnic group similar to the French or English. So, at one point they were a collection of tribes who eventually formed a nation state. Over time they lost territory to the Ori and developed their non-violant secular liberal ideology. The majority of their population would have either been wiped out or converted to Orgin, with the survivors falling back to their isolated mountain town.

    b) The Alteran were originally a collection of verious individuals from all over the planet who fled persercution from the Ori. Think of Orgin as a religion similar to the Christanity/Islam of the middle ages except they actually conquered the world. So, verious scientists, liberals, etc who already had a non-violant secular ideology and rejected Orgin sought refuge at the isolated mountain town.

I personally think b fits better with what we know of the Ancients since it would explain why they were so idealistic. The Alteran, as a people, never had to actually defend territory.

I got the impression that the mountain town wasn't exactly their home planet, but just the last planet they were on before the fled the galaxy. I could be wrong though...

        I think you are...

If you have a look at the surface of their mountain town it looks very primitive, like, pre-industriel revolution primitive. I suspect this was the level of technology the Ori had so they weren't exactly thinking "space ship" when they saw the top of the mountain had blown off.

We don't know for sure whether there might have been other similar enclaves of Alterans living elsewhere under similar "primitive" conditions as those in AoT. The group we did see is pretty small in numbers to be developing so much advanced technology, especially intergalactic spaceships, the development of which would require many specialists from a wide variety of scientific fields. Just a thought.

So it would be something more like the Atlantis story : they had a secret base full of technology and operatives all around the galaxy. With the Ori gaining more and more power, they started falling back to their mountain. When there was no chance of winning, except using the AOT, they decided to leave the battleground and settle in a more peaceful place.

I just wonder if others from their kind (apart from the Alterans and Oris) were left behind and felt wronged by both groups. Did they flee? Were they exterminated or converted?

And did all the Alterans came to MW?
Hasn't there been some that just stopped somewhere before getting there? (maybe material for SGU?)
If there was, have they ever been found by the Oris ? (I think that the way they did their crusade in MW shows some expertise)

L'Histoire est une comédie - Les gentils gagnent toujours à la fin.

Just replace "galaxy" with "planet" and I agree.

I doubt it happened like Atlantis. There base may have been a secret but I doubt it was because the Ori had driven them there. The Alterans said in AoT that the Ori were gaining more and more followers and that war was inevitable and could cost millions of lives (I take that as the Alterans being confident of victory but at a heavy price). They didn't use the Ark because it denied the Ori their right to free will.
